A record was established last year in the export "of perishable produce, which amounted to £3,240,000 —an increase of 26 per cent, on the preceding year. The value of meat exported was £536,000—an increase of 58 per cent. ANOTHER BIG NUGGET. Received January 9, 10.20 a.m. MELBOURNE, January 9. SCIENCE CONGRESS.
Received January 9, 10.2 a.m. ADELAIDE, January 9. At the meeting of the Australasian Association for the Advancement of science Dr. Greig Smith, president of the Sanitary Science section, said the most dangerous method of aerial infection was from - a consumptive's cough. He considered that the danger of infection from sputum was exaggerated. When thrown on the ground it fell as a paste, which dried into a stiff mass that broke »after the lapse of considerable time into comparatively large particles, which were not easily transported. Exposure to light and air weakened the bacilli to such an extent that they were unable to set up tuberculosis in an extremely sensitive guinea-pig otherwise than with the greatest difficulty. SEIZURE OF OPIUM. Received January 10, 1.10 a.m. SYDNEY, January 9. One hundred tins of opium were seized aboard the steamer Miowera bearing the mark of a Vancouver firm. PLAGUE. Notification has been received by Captain Collins, the Federal representative in London, that commissions for Australian and New Zealand medical officers in the Navy are available for a further term of three years. DISCOVERY OF A BOMB. Received January 10, 1.10 a.m. SYDNEY, January 9.*» The " man arrested in 1 ! connection with the discovery of a bomb at Mosman, is alleged to have threatened the owner of the house for dismissing him. A quantity of fuse and detonators were found in the man's house.
