During the final quarter of last year 1,400 criminal cases were dealt with at the Wellington Magistrate's Court. This is an increase of 345 On the last three months of 1905. One hundred applications for old age pensions were granted by the Wellington Magistrate, and thirteen were refused, during the last quarter of 1906. The Minister for Lands says that the Government not intend to relax its efforts in providing land for the people under the Land for Settle • ments Act. Auctioneer's licenses were granted at the meeting of the Masterton I Borough Council, last evening, to Messrs W. B. Chennells, R» Et Howell, J. G. Eliott, J. lorns, and H. R. Wood. During the month of December, 1906, 118 cattle, 23 calves, 1,051 sheep' and lambs, and 182 pigs were slaughtered at the Masterton abattoir. The revenue amounted 'to £125 8s 6d. During the month the Manager condemned wholly one bullock, four pigs, and partially •two cattle, five sheep, and four pigs. A Dannevirke telegram states that the four-year-old daughter of John Crist was, on Monday, severely scalded by overturning a pail of hot water with which her mother was scrubbing the verandah. During the mother's momentary absence the child must have upset the water over herself, with the result that she was badly scalded, and died during the night. A verdict of accidental death was returned at the inquest. At the meeting of the Finance Committee of the Masterton County Council, yesterday morning, at winch there were present Crs Welch (chairman), Cockbum-Hood, Harris, Morris, Toogood, and Kebbell, the Treasurer reported as follows: — Bank General Fund Account, dr., £2,078 14s 2d; Local Bodies Loan Account, cr., £1,322 7s lOd; Accounts, dr. balance £B2O 17s 4d; receipts for the month, £535 12s 9d. Accounts amounting to £2,169 18s lOd (including £1,221 15s 4d interest on Government loans due February Ist next) were passed for payment. . Digest What You Bat. A lad named Kromer, aged 14, son of a settler, was killed at Central Moutere yesterday. He was thrown; from a cart he was driving, and the' wheel passed over his body. Mr J. Liddell Kelly, who has reliiv quished the editorship of the Nevr, Zealand Times, after filling the position for over eight years, contemplates making a-trip to England at an early date. A young man, named David Duley, a draper's assistant at Ashburton, was drowned in the Waimakariri River, near Belfast, yesterday, while bathing. The body has not yet been, recovered. —Association. Spencer, formerly Chief Inspector of Schools, in Taranaki, and lately appointed Assistant Inspector at Hawke's Bay, has been d editor of the School Jour-. nalt , j At Dunedin, yesterday, a single woman, Mary Kearney, was committed for trial on a charge of murdering her female child on December 11th. The medical evidence showed that the child had breathed. A farm hand, named Albert Edward Newdick, shot himself at Upper Hutt, on Monday afternoon, The deceased was 34 years of age* and has left a wife and four children. He came from England about; twelve months ago. Mr Hornsby, M.H.R., is at present in Wellington* and has had an interview with the Minister for Lands relative to the acquisition of certain properties in .the Wairarapa for closer settlement. The member for Wairarapa will leave for Christchurch on Friday.
Dr. Hay, Assistant Inspector-Gen-eral of Hospitals and Charitable Aid, has been appointed Inspector-General of Mental Hospitals. Dr Valintine, Assistant Chief Health Officer, has been appointed Inspector-General of Hospitals. The two institutions will in future be under separate heads. The Masterton Municipal Brass Band will render a number of selections in Church and Bannister Streets, and Worksop Road, this evening l . Those portions of the streets not visited this evening will be visited to-morrow Subscriptions will be solicited inaid of the band's funds, A Hokitika telegram states that a horse, attached to a baker's cart, at Ross, bolted, yesterday. The driver-' was thrown out, and had his leg broken, and another occupant, re--feeived slight injuries. An old-age' pensioner, named Barnes Simpson, hv trying to stop the horse; was knockeddown, receiving fatal' injuries. At the inquest, at Nelson, on Mr Shain, of the Public Works Depart-' ment, who was found dead in his office, the medical evidence showed that deceased must have died a week ago from asphyxia, the result of burying his face in his waistcoat during an epileptic fit. A verdict was returned accordingly.

The monthly meeting of the Masterton Municipal Fire Brigade was held, last evening, Captain Jenkins ■ presiding over a good attendance of members. An apology for absence was received from Fireman H. Ewington The Secretary reported the average attendance for the month of December as follows: —Alarms 20J meetings 25. A letter was received from the U.F.8.A., giving the definition of the rule in reference, to riding hose. The Masterton Fire Police wrote thanking the Brigade for the use of their plant for practice purposes. One fireman was struck off the role for continued absence. The Secretary reported in detail on the committee's conference with the band' in reference to the sports to be held on January 17th. The report was adopted. Branchman Warner applied for a long service medal. Mr H. Scales was nominated for membership, and Misses Lysaght and Smith were elected honorary members. The Brigade decided to hold the next meeting on January 23rd.

Phenomenal hauls of warehou are being made near Wellington Heads, the hot season having resulted in the fish making its customary tour of the coastal feeding grounds quite a month earlier than usual. A small stable at the rear of Mrs Jones' residence, in Cricket Street, was gutted by fire yesterday morning. A quantity of furniture which was, stored in the stable was destroyed. . At. tbr meeting of the Masterton borough Council, last evening, a letter "was received from the Masterton Ambulance Corps asking for a grant towards the cost of procuring a horse ambulance waggon. The Mayor stated that an ambulance waggon was required for Masterton, and he would give his last half-year's honorarium (£25) towards, Jne cost, of the waggon. ' Mr Henry Howorth, Examiner of Titles in the Land Transfer and Deeds Office at Wellington, died yesterday after a short illness, aged 72. He was a son of Mr James Ho worth, who many years ago was Provincial Solicitor and Crown Prosecutor at ■' Dunedin. The late Mr Howorth was elected to the House of Representatives in 1869 as the representative of the Taieri.—Association. A meeting/ of the Masterton Ambulance Corps was £held last evening.
