NORTHERN BOWLING TOURNAMENT.
SECOND DAY'S PLAY. The Northern Bowling Association's Tournament was continued on the Masterton Greens, yesterday, the fourth, fifth and sixth rounds being decided. The weather was again fine and the greens played splendidly, some very fine games being witnessed during the day. FOURTH ROtJND. Stratford met and defeated Feilding after a well-contested game, and a most interesting finish. At the last head the rinks were even, with a score of 17 each. Another head was played, and Stratford putting on 7 won the game. Pahiatua, who won their three games yesterday, were defeated for the first time by Upper Plain. At the 19th head both rinks were level. On the next head a splendid piece of play was done by Mr J. Coradine, the Upper Plain skip. Pahiatua were laying one. Mr Coradine played and drew it out, and playing his last bowl with a draw lay five, making Upper Plain's score 22. They secured two more points in the last head, and won by 7. The game between Carlton and Patea was keenly contested by each player from the start of the first head to the finish. The Carlton team got away with a lead that at the 7th head gave them 11 points to Patea's 1, and this lead was maintained up to the 15th head, when the Patea team drew level. The Patea skip and his men played splendidly, and at the 18th head had increased their score to 20. Carlton only scored two from the 11th head to the 18th against their opponen's 19. They rallied, however, at the last three heads, and increased their score by laying 1, 3 and 2, bringing their total up to 19. Patea thus won by the narrow margin of one point. Gisborne met and easily defeated Carterton. The latter team only scored 3 in the last 11 heads, whilst their opponents increased their score by 16. Up to the 9th head the game was evenly contested, but after this the Carterton team fell away. The Grey-town-Ponsonby game was won by Grey town. The latter team scored four at the first head, and increased their total to 15 at the 12th head against their opponent's 11. At the next head Ponsonby lay 3, only one behind Greytown. They failed to score during the next six heads. The game resulted —Greytown 26, Ponsonby 17. Newtown beat Eltham easily. The former team secured the lead after the second head, and increased this until the finish of the game, winning by 12 points. The game between Karori and Napier ended in the latter team securing a comfortable win by 15 points. The winning team were never pushed after the 4th head, when they had a lead of two points. They increased 1 their lead every head up to the finish. A keenly contested game was played between Dannevirke and Victoria. In the first four heads Victoria lay 10, and Dannevirke 3. In the 6th, 7th, Bth and 9th heads Dannevirke scored 11 points, making their score 14. Their opponents, however, were not to be denied, and rallying put on 7 in the next four heads. Dannevirke scored in the next head, making the totals t lB all., Scoring again in the 19th and 20th head Dannevirke increased their total to 24 against their opponents' 21. In the last head Mr C. Norwood, skip of the Victoria team, got in two very nice bowls. With the first he cut "out , two and lay five, finishing up with a draw, and lay six, winning the game for his side by increasing the score to 26 against Dannevirke's 24. Te Rau won their match against Wellington by 19 points against 13. The game was about even up to the 1 8th head. The winning team were in good form, and kept their lead to the end of i the last head. Greenmeadows, another of the unbeaten teams, met ] and easily defeated the Hutt team by 29 to 16. Greenmeadows started to score at the second head, and won comfortably. Victoria (27) v. Dannevirke (24). Greenmeadows (29) v. Hutt (16). Upper Plain (24) v. Pahiatua (17). Te Rau (19) v. Wellington (13). FIFTH ROUND. This round was started immediately after luncheon. Te Rau met Eltham and added another win to their unbeaten record, their score of 27 being made up by good even play throughout. The Eltham team only scored in the sth, 10th, 15th and the two last heads. The game between Newtown and Masterton was one-sided. The play from the •9th head, when scores were nine each, was in Masterton's favour. The local team played well together, and finally won by 21 points. The ■Carlton rink in their game against Napier played well together, and won by 18 points. The game between the Hutt and Greytown teams was a very interesting one. Hutt "had scored 14 at the 7th head against their opponents' 3; at the 14th head they had not increased their score. The Greytown team, playing well together, brought their scpre to 19. At the 16th head the Hutt lay four, and at the 18th and 19th heads lay three and two, bringing their score up to 25. Their opponents had obtained a slight lead by laying four at the 17th head, arid eventually won by two points. Feilding had no difficulty in winning their game against Wellington. At the 4th head the latter team lay five to their opponents' 1. At the 7th head Feilding drew level, and gradually forged ahead, and were not overtaken until the 13th head, when their opponents drew level, the score being 11 ali. Wellington went to pieces in the next eight heads, only notching one. Feilding won easily by 12 points. in the Petone and Greenmeadows match was of a most interesting character. At the 9th head the scores were —Petone 4, Greenmeadows 14. The former team by good play drew level with their opponents at the 14th head, the score board reading 15 each. Greenmeadows rallied, and added four in the next two heads. Their opponents also put on four. So that at the 19th head both were level again, 19 points
each. The game was now very exciting. In the next head Greenmeadows scored one, and there was still a chance for Petone to win in the last head. They failed, however, to score, and their opponents secured another point, making the scores —Greenmedows 21, Petone 19. The winning team have so far an unbeaten record in the tournament, and are level with Te Rau. The game between Ponsonby and Upper Plain resulted in a win for the former. At the 4th head Upper Plain had scored 5 against their opponents' 1. Ponsonby, however, took the lead after the 7th head, and won easily. Pahiatua suffered defeat at the hands of Carterton, who won by 15. The losing team played well up to the 12th head. A good game was played between Dannevirke and Gisborne. The former team were handicapped owing to the retirement of their skip, who was slightly indisposed. Gisborne finally won by 22 to 15. Following were the scores:— Te Rau (27) v. Eltham (13). Ponsonby (26) v. Upper Plain (14). Carterton (26) v. Pahittua (11). Gisborne (22) v. Dannevirke (15). SIXTH ROUND. The game between Victoria and Greenmeadows was a decidedly interesting one, and keenly contested. At the 19th head each side had scored 18; in the next head Victoria added one to their score. On the final head Victoria required one to win, with opponents laying two close up to the "jack," with one bowl to go. The skip of .the Victoria team sent a fast drive down, cutting out two and placing one. The skip of Greenmeadows had last bowl, and played a draw that terminated in a "wick," and rolled over to the jack. This made the game equal, and in the play-off Greenmeadows scored one and won the game. Upper PlainCarterton match was also an even one. Cartertoh scored first, and at the 3rd head had six on the board against their opponents' one. Upper Plain scored in the next three heads, and got in four in the Bth and 9th head. The scores were —Carterton 17, Upper Plain 11, at the 13th head. The game from the 13th head to the finish was exciting. Upper Plain got in three at the 14th head, and added two more in the next head, and at the 19th head the scores were equal (20 all). In the final head Upper Plain required two to win. In trying to draw a shot the Upper Plain skip cut out his own bowl, thus leaving Carterton the winners. Petone met, and after a very close game, defeated Greytown. After the last head had been played both sides were 19. In the play off Petone managed to score two and won the game. Masterton had an easy win over Karori. The winners showed fine form. Following were the results: — Wellington (26) v. Patea (17). Masterton (21) v. Karori (11). Petone (21) v. Greytown (IS). Carterton (21) v. Upper Plain (20). Pahiatua (20) v. Dannevirke (13).
