MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
ORDINARY MEETING
Tho ordinary meeting of the Masterton Borough Council, last evening, was presided over by the Mayor (Mr J. A. Renall). There were also present—Crs J. H. Pauling, J. Elliott, T. G. Hoar, W. Morris, E. Feist, E. McEwen, E. G. Eton, and J. C. Ewington. An apology for absence was received from Cr F. W. Temple. The Masterton Municipal Brass Band wrote applying for the use of the Park on January 17th for their sports meeting, and for 'permission to make a charge of sixpence at the gates. The letter was referred to the Park Committee, with power to act. Messrs A. Young and J. W. de Castro wrote applying to have the gas extended to their premises in Hessey Street. It was decided to reply that the application would be considered when the new gas pipes arrived. A letter was received from Messrs Lyttle and Sons, through Mr W. G. Newton, offering the Council a portion of their land with 16|ft frontage to Queen Street and 99ft to Smith Street for the sum of £412 10s. Before purchasing the land the Council decided to take legal advice in -the matter.
A letter was received f rom Mr p. X. Quinn ippiying for permission to niiinbGi' houses in the Borough, with inch brass figures, the charge for supplying and affixing each figure being ninepence. The matter was held over. Mr W, M\ (3ble, on behalf of Coles' Trufciifes, waited on the meeting, asked that the seal of the BorMkgh be fixed to the plan of subdivision of Cole's Estate. The road through the estate would be completed in about a fortight. On ihe motion of Cr Elliott it was decided to grant the request providing that an amount, to be fixed by the Engineer, was deposited 'as a guarantee that the work would be pro- ! perly completed. Mr H. F. Fraser wrote asking that his license as a billiard-saloon keeper be transferred to Mr J. P. Thomson. The application was granted. The Mayor and Crs Ewington and Morris were appointed a committee to arrange for clearing the gorse off the abattoir paddock. The Council decided to meet the settlers interested to arrange for a stop bank at the water supply intake as a protection against the flood waters from the Waingawa River. , An application from Messrs Varn* ham and Rose for a permit to erect an extension in wood to the W.F.C.A. granary, near the Railway Station, was referred to the Engineer*
Cr Ewington was given permission to bring his notice of motion, "that the number of Councillors be increased from nine to twelve," before the meeting next Tuesday evening. Mr A. W. Hogg, on behalf of the Masterton Hospital Trustees, wrote\ applying for the extension of the gas to the boundary of the new hospital at Lansdowne; also asking the Council to supervise the work of installing the gas into the building, the cost of installation to be borne by the Hospital Trustees. The Gas Manager was instructed to submit a report on the matter to the next meeting.
