WAIPOUA TRUSS BRIDGE.

EFFECT OF TRAFFIC UPON IT. With regard to the state, of the truss bridge over the Waipoua River at the extreme north end, the County Engineer reported as follows to the meeting of the Masterton County Council yesterday:—"The high speed of traffic practised over the Waipoua truss bridge is seriously detrimental to the life of the structure. Many of the hardwood blocks are shewing signs of depression. The spans being of a considerable length (90ft), the stress on the different members is greatly multiplied by the increased speed. I would suggest that horse and vehicular traffic be restricted to a walking pace. The ford being available would inflict little hardship on the public." . The Council decided to place a notice-on the bridge, restricting horse and vehicular traffic to a walking pace pending a by-law to that effect being made.
