HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT. By Telegraph—Press Association. WELLINGTON, January 7. The Department of Industries and 1 Commerce has received the following -cable from the High Commissioner, dated London, sth inst:—The mutton v market is dull. There is only a small , supply of New Zealand mutton on -. hand. Canterbury brands are quoted at 4|d, and North Island at 4|d per lb. River Plate mutton is quoted at 3fd per lb. Stocks of lamb on hand are heavy, and are widely distributed amongst the agents, who are pushing sales. *Australian lamb is quoted at 5d per lb. The beef market is steady. There is a good demand for v New Zealand beef, which is quoted at 3gd per lb, and 3fd per lb for hindquarters and forequarters, respectively. There are heavy supplied of A butter on' hand, and the market is dull. Some holders are forcing sales, and butter buyers are holding back expecting prices to go lower. Choice New Zealand is quoted at 108s, Argentine 107s, Australian 102s per cwt. Danish is steady at 122s per cwt. The cheese market is firm, with an improved demand. New Zealand brands are quoted at 62s per cwt. The hemp market is quiet but steady. Good, fair grade, on spot is quoted at £3B 10s, and January-March shipments at £37 5s per ton. The cocksfoot seed market is firm, and there is i fair demand for the better grades. » Bright, 171b seed, is quoted at 47s f per cwt. There is only a small supply of New Zealand wheat on hand. Long and short-berried is quoted at 29s 6d and 28s Cd respectively per 4961b5, ex-granary. New Zealand oats are quiet, but firm. Sparrowbills are i quoted at 25s per 3841b5, and Danish at 19s per 3201q5, ex-granary. •' ' _________
Messrs Dalgety and Co./ Ltd., report on their Eketahuna stock sale, held on Friday, 4th inst., as follows: —Ail sheep that were advertised came forward and more cattle. Bidding under the hammer was brisk for sheep, also for all steers, but heifers were hard to quit, although we managed to quit all but one pen of steers and two pens of heifers; pigs were also hard to quit. We quote:—Ewes, just shorn and taken from lambs, 12s 9d; dry ewes, to 42s lid; 2-tooth ewes, to 14s lid; 2-tooth wethers, to 14s 6d; medium lambs to 8s 3d; cull lambs, to 5s 6d; fat steers, £6 ss; 3-year steers, to £4 13s; 2_-year steers, to £3.175; 2year steers, £3 ss; yearlings, to £2 2s 6d; empty cows, to £2 7s 6d; speyed heifers rising 2 years, £2 2s; 16-months heifers, to 26s 6d: pigs, slips, to 13s. At Alfredton we only had a small, yarding, settlers being busy with their hay—Hoggets, to 14s 9d. No cattle sold.
