MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

ANNUAL RETURNS. The annual returns of the business transacted at the Masterton Magistrate's Court for the year ended December 31st, .1906, show that 577 persons were taken into custody. Of these 366 were summarily convicted, 267 were fined, 71 were imprisoned in lieu of fine or surety, 26 were peremptorily imprisoned, 79 were convicted, and discharged with a caution, 72 were discharged for want of prosecution or evidence, and 8 were committed for trial. There were 58 miscellaneous applications heard in Court or Chambers. Of these 44 were granted, and 14 were refused. In old age pensions, applications were heard for 39 new claims, and for 88 renewals. Of this number 23 and 86 were granted, respectively, and 16 and 2, respectively, were refused.
