THE Wairarapa Age MORNING DAILY. SATURDAY, JANUARY 5, 1907. THE BOWLING TOURNAMENT.

In Masterton we are about to witness a larger and more important tournament than is, perhaps, generally recognised. We refer to the Bowling Tournament, which will be commenced on the Masterton Greens, on Monday next, when fully 100 visitors from different clubs belonging to the Association will take part in the contest for honours. Every effort should be made to ensure that the visitors' stay in Masterton should be a pleasant one. The officials and members of the Bowling Club will certainly have the brunt of the pleasant duty of entertaining and amusing the visitors, and will, no doubt, acquit themselves creditably. But the town generally is interested in the matter to which we refer, and we should liike to see a public spirit manifest' itself,-, which would regard the visiting bowlers not only as guests of the local Club, but of the town of Masterton. Members of the Masterton Club who have visited tournaments held in different towns always come , home speaking in glowing terms of the splendid receptions of a semi-public character, which have been accorded to the visiting bowlers, and we should be sorry if it were to appear that Masterton were somewhat lacking in a true appreciation of the importance of the Tournament, and the very evident "call" that there is to see that the visitors have a thoroughly good time of it. There are many public spirited men in Masterton, as|well"as hospitable^ones, jind__we no""doubtr" that ""the* Tournament will prove a success viewed from every point. At the same time it has been remarked to us that there does not appear to be so much general interest as one would have expected. It is just as well to remark, perhaps, that Masterton will be visited [by men,

chiefly, hailing from between twenty and thirty towns throughout the country, and the business men of Master ton would certainly like the visiting bowlers to' carry away with them the impression that Masterton is a progressive town, and a pleasant place to live in.
