METHODS OF THE POLICE. Received January 4, 8.5 a.m. ST. PETERSBURG, Jan. 3. Nicholas Schmidt, owner of an art furniture factory at Moscow, is undergoing trial for alleged conspiracy against the Czar. The prosecution is based on a confession, made after police torture and enforced sleeplessness for a week, which was subsequently retracted.
A PREFECT ASSASSINATED. Received January 4, 8.30 a.m. LONDON, January 3. Reuter's Agency reports that General Von der Launitz, Prefect of St. Petersburg, has been assassinated. Another report states that the Prefect was shot dead during the consecration of a new building.

The military authorities have refused to detail soldiers to guard the banks.. Bankers threaten to close their establishments.
The large cotton manufacturers threaten to transfer their mills to the interior of Russia unless workmen accept all their conditions.
