CHURCH AND STATE. Received January 2, 9.36 a.m. * PARIS, January 1.
The French bishops have unanimously decided that all contributions of the faithful must be handed to the bishops, who alone will distribute them. Parishioners are forbidden to furnish priests' or curates' stipends. The decision has caused much irritation.
Many French communes are asking nominal rents for the priests' manses. In one instance a franc (9d) per annum was asked.
