RACING. THE WAIRARAPA RACING CLUB MEETING. FIRST DAY. The Wairarapa Racing Club opened its summer meeting on the Tauhereni-

kau Racecourse, yesterday. The weather was fine. The course was in splendid order, and some very fast times were registered during the day. The attendance of the public was very large, and the recent improvements to the course and its surroundings were the subject of favourable comment. During the day, Arahura, a black gelding by Merrie England —Capsize mare, belonging to H. S. Izard, was offered for sale by Mr I G. A. Fairbrother. The bidding reached £3B—£l2 ' short of the reserve, and the horse was passed in. The sum of £9,155 was invested on the totalisator during the day, as compared with £9,892 for the corresponding [day last year, being a decrease of £737. Results: — Maiden Hack, of 100 sovs; 5 furlongs—2l9 Tupono 1. (H. Cairns), 1; 136 Stepmar, 8.12 2; 181 Lucretius 8.3, 3. Won easily by several lengths. As the result of a collision when entering the straight, Flintgun and Star Queen fell, but neither of the jockeys (L. Wilson and J. Ayers) or the horses were injured. Ensign broke one of his legs during the race, and had to be destroyed. The Stewards held an inquiry into the cause of the falls in the race.
