DROWNING FATALITY.

MARTON, January 1

Yesterday afternoon a drowning accident occurred in the Rangitikei River. A party of children were bathing when Mr W. Marshall's eldest daughter, aged 13 years, and Charles Swainson's eldest'son, aged 10 years, got into a deep hole, and were drowned. Miss Gillett made a plucky attempt to rescue the children. She returned to the bed of the river in an exhausted condition. The parents are well-known settlers. At the inquest a verdict of accidental drowning was returned. . The, jury commended Miss Gillett's plucky effort in trying to save the children. %
