NELSON, January 1

The holiday passed off very successfully. The weather was good. The chief attractions to-day were the athletic and cycling sports at Richmond and the races at Tapawera, but the results were only of local interest. The railway traffic to-day was the heaviest experienced here. A fire occurred at Richmond, today, when the residence of Mr Wanstall was gutted. Most" of the furniture was saved.
