The Wairarapa Racing Club's Meeting, which will open at Tauherenikau to-morrow, is certain to be very largely attended, and another successful gathering should be recorded. Since the last meeting at Easter a number of improvements have been effected in connection with the building arrangements. The addition to the tea pavilion has brought the latter right up-to-date and it is now one of the largest arid most complete in the colony. Like other tracks at this time of the year, the course proper will naturally be very firm going, and the sounder horses will consequently stand better' chances than those which are more or less sore. The withdrawal of some of the latter which found the going too hard at Manawatu and Martinborough, will reduce the fields to a certain extent, but nevertheless the racing should be decidedly interesting throughout. The Cup contest in which there should be about ten starters, should,.be well worth witnessing. The following may prove worthy of support in their respective engagements: — Rimutaka Hack Handicap.—Devonia and La Torpedo. Nursery Handicap. —Elevation and Happy Maid. Wairarapa Cup.—Glenullin and Riflemaid. Tuhitarata Handicap.—Pink 'Un and Splendid Idea. ' Moiki Hack Welter. Merrie Rose and Sharkeyne. Reynolds Welter. Dulcinea x and Mataari. Pukio Hack.— The Voucher and Marseillaise. The Rangitikei meeting, which will open at Bulls to-morrow, should be a record for the club, the acceptances forming a splendid average, while the class represented is exceptionally good. The following, taking recent form as a guide, should run prominently:—Flying Handicap: Lord Soult. Hurdle Handicap: Sardonyx. Rangitikei Cup: Apa and Truce.. Carnarvon Hack: Kitchen Maid. Hack Hurdles: Cassiopea. Welter: Flotilla. Welter Hack: Highden. The Tasman gelding, Te Kainui, which was purchased recently by a Masterton sportsman at a very moderate figure won three races at the Lower Valley meeting. The gelding was brought out in very solid condition by R. Knox. Black Oil broke down while running in the Bracelet Handicap at Martinborough owing to the hard going, and will not race again for some months.
Mahuta, winner of the Maiden at Martinborough, and who ran second in the Ashhurst Guineas, had only been in M. McGrath's hands for four or five weeks, and it was not generally expected that he would come to hand so quickly. Three months ago the colt was being attended to by a qualified veterinary surgeon, who strongly advised that Mahuta should be turned out for at least twelve months. Doubtless the veterinary surgeon is very much surprised to find the colt racing so well. The win of Mr R. Buick's little mare, Riflemaid, in the Ashhurst Cup was a popular one, for on several occasions she had run with a certain amount of bad luck, partly owing to her erratic t behaviour at the starting post. Lately she has been behaving much better at the barrier, and being one of the gamest finishers in this district, should score further successes.
Full Rate, who has been talked about for some time as a speedy one, scored at Ashhurst in fine style, and his backers received the small dividend of £1 16s in a field of seven starters. At Awapuni on Saturday he ran a dead heat, the dividend this time being £1 ss.
