Most of the Australian State Premiers appear to be in need of rest at present. It is only a few days ago since Mr Kidston passed through Wellington, and the cable messages recently informed us that the Victorian Premier, Mr J. H. Carruthers, though greatly improved in health, still feels the need of a complete rest from official duties. He has decided to take a trip to New Zealand early in the New Year. A peculiar case of cruelty to animals, tried at Arai'at on the 22nd inst., is reported in the Sydney papers. After the hearing three men named H. Anders, A. Gibson, and R. Scott, who were concerned in a trotting match from Lake Bolac to Ararat, 32 miles, were each fined £lO, with £2 16s costs, for cruelty to animals. The evidence showed that the horses gave up ten miles from Ararat, but the animals got within three miles before they collapsed. At a hill at Denicull Creek both horses were led and partly dragged up, and were staggering from exhaustion. \ That dreadful word "consumption" need never be feared if Dr. Sheldon's New Dis covery is taken in time. Thousands speak of it in the highest praise. For sale by H. E. Eton, Chemist, Ma'sterton, J. Bail lie, Carterton, and the Mauriceville; Cooperative Store, Mauricoville West.
