PROMOTION OF PEACE.
LETTER FROM THE COBDEN' CLUB. Received December 28, 7.43 a.m. LONDON, December 27. The Cobden Club has reminded the Government that it is pledged to economy, and suggested a reduction in the estimates for 1907, owing to the favourable hopes of a continuance of peace. Thp Premier (Sir H. CampbellBannerman), in a sympathetic reply, says he is glad that the Club is alive as ever to the danger of allowing the wealth which freetrade has brought to our doors, to be squandered in needless or provocative expenditure.
