ELTHAM AXEMEN'S CARNIVAL.
By Telegraph —Press Association, "... .nAw PLYMOUTH, Dec. 26. The Eltham Axemen's Carnival commenced to-day in splendid weather. : The attendance was between , 3,000 and 4,000. Competition was keen, members of the Australian team failing to secure a place. The following were the results: — Maiden chop.—J. Neustroski 1, J. E. Richardson 2, J. McNab 3. Time lmin 21sec. Thirty-three competed. Double-handed Sawing Championship (2-foot logs).—Casey and Pretty (Eltham) 1, Michael and Gregory (Taihape) 2, Yolyke Bros (Midhurst) 3. Five pairs competed. Time, 30 4-ssec. Won easily. New Zealand • Two-.foot Standing Championship Chop. D. Pretty (Hamilton) 1, G. McAuley (Rotorua) 2, F. Perkins (Taihape) 3. Ten competed, including the Australian champions. Time, 3min 34 3-ssec, beating the world's record made by Blanc in Australia in 1903 by 24secs. Underhand Handicap (18-inch logs). —A. Dillon (35sec) 1, J. R. Vickers (45sec) 2, W. Gregory (30 sec) 3. Thirty-nine competed, in four heats. Time, lmin 33 l-ssec. Weston, the 'Australian and world's champion, was unable to make up the handicap. Single-handed Sawing Handicap.— McAuley (25sec) 1, C. Volyke (scr) 2, J. Phillips (ssec) 3. Eleven competed. Time, lmin 37sec. ' The principal interest is centring round the Axemen's Cup of £l4O, on Thursday, in which there are 53 competitors. Running, and cycling events took place to-day, for which there was good competition.
