By Telegraph-.Press Association.

WANUANUI, December 26,

The Boulllng matcb, Jaa. Stanbuiy (ex-champion of the world) v. Wm. Webfc, of Wanganni, took place oa the Wanganui Kiver, this afternoon, and resulted m a win for Welbb. The distance was aboat three miles and the parse £4OO. The race may be described in a few words. Stanbury led by from two to three lengths till 500 yards from home, when Wefcb got on even terms, and Stanbury ooiiapued. The men got away well together, and remained on even terms for the first two or three hundred yards. Stanbary, who had rowed the quicker stroke at the .start, now considerably lengthened oat, and got into Webb's water, with a lead of a oouple of lengths. Going past theKaitvhake f&h, half.a boiJe'down the. course, Webb, who was a couple of lengths in the rear, and getting: the wash from Staubury's oars,, quickened up, and gained about half a length. Webb was towing as"clean as a whistle," while Stanbury was splashing to some extent, This order was maintained for some* distance, Webb being forced in shore. So close to the .bank did. be keep that he once brushed a { willow and shortly afterwards lost I a oouple of strikes from the, same cause. At the two-mile post Stanbury was still leading by a oouple of lengths, and t;o all appearances was rowing easily.' Webb, at this poiot, turned out into the river, but soon was close in shore again. The same, order was still preserved, Stanbury leading by three lengths, but at the halt-mile post Webb quiokeneti< up and gained a length. Almost immediately afterwards Webb quickened again, and Stanbury slackened. The looal man made an effort to get on even terms, and just as be did so the big Australian, collapsed. Webb rowed on, and was declared the winner, the time being given a*. 18m in 50seo. There was a fairly brisk wind in the scullers 1 favour, Webb throughout pulled the longer stroke, though eaoh man made the same number of strokes. Stanbury, interviewed after thfr race, acknowledged that he bad been beaten by a better man. Me had, he 'aaid, bean rowed to a standstill, and could not have put in another stroke. To-night at the public presentation of the stake money, Stannary made a nice little speeoh, in which be publioly stated that he fairly beaten, »nd Webb publicly acknowledged Stanbury as a fair and sportsmanlike opponent.
