DEATH OF A MAORI CHIEF.

CARTERTON, December 20.
Kingi Ngatuere, a well-known chief, died at the Hurunuiorangi pah yesterday, from injuries sustainecLby a fall from a gig on Saturday night. The deceased was the son of the noted chief Ngatuere Tawliiri Mate**, of the Ngatimoe tribe, whose adherents are to be found as far north as Hawke's Bay. Ngatuere was twice married, and has left a widow and five daughters and two sons. It is anticipated that the tangi will rival anything of the kind yet held in the •colony.
