DEPARTMENT OF LABOUR.

The Journal of the Department of I Labour for December contains the 1 following in reference to Masterton and Greytown : Masterton. —The prosperity which has characterised this district for sometime past is Still maintained, and there is every prospect of its continuance. Ttoe building trades have *beenbusy droning the month; good carpenters (especially being in. demand. In ; the engineering trades :good business has been maintained, repairs to fraction and other engines and the installation of oil-engines for shearing machines' constituting a large part of the work. Cycle engineers have also been fairly busy. The cement-pipe works and the variolas brickyards have teen busy. Flax-mills have been busy, the demand being good. The sawmills throughout the district have been busy during the month. It is reported that the output has been greater than for some time past, and very good time has been put in by the hands employed. In the dressmaking and tailoring trades some of the hands are working overtime. Reports indicate that the trade is perhaps a little better than last year. Furniture-manufacturers have been ■ fairly busy, and all tradesmen have "been fully employed. Saddle and j harness-making: Kormal. There is| very little variation in this trade, j Coachbuilders have been fairly busy., i there being an improvement upon; previous months.
