THE PREMIER ON THE NATIVE LAND QU ESI lON. By Telegraph—Pros9 Association. WELLINGTON, December 6. A gathering, organised for the purpose of congratulating Dr. b'indlay on his appointment to the Ministry, was held at the Town Hail, to-night. There was a large attendance of the public. Hon. T. W. Itisiop, Mayor of Wellington, preside! Sir Joseph Ward, in the course of a speech, said that financial results for the eight months of the financial year just passed were £104,570 better than for the corresponding period of the previous year. Toe present position with regard to native land could not be allowed to continu3. There must be a system by vvhiob Europeans would be enabled to settle upon large tracts in the North Island in a manner satisfactory to the Maori population. For that reason he was not sure whether ifi would not be best to appoint a commissioner to investigate the whole position of native lands with a view to holding sufficient for the Maoris and setting aside the balance for disposition. Sir Joseph repeated the warnings he had given in previous speeches regarding the yellow peril, and took tho opportunity of denying the statement that on going to London he wjuld not return to the colony. Sir Joseph had a very cordial reception, and Dr. Findlay, in responding to what had beon said by previous speakers, was warmly applauded.
