MEMORIAL TO FALLEN SOLDIERS.

NEW PLYMOUTH, Dao. 3. At a public meeting to-night, presided over by the Mayor, it was resolved that a suitable memorial be erected t»t Marslaud Hill to the memory of the Imperial and colonial troops who fought and died during the Maori War in Taranaki. Maisland Hill, overlooking the town, was formerly the site of the barracks and the refugees camp. A speaker at the meeting recalled the faot that the first volunteer soldier in the Empire who fell in battle was Trooper John Sarte.Jwho waq shot dead at Waitara by the rebel Maoris. A strong committee, including the Mayor, Captain Standlsb, Colonel Messenger, Colonel Ellis, Colonel Okey, -.' Colonel Collins, Colonel Watt, Captain Price, Sir W. Russell, and a number of old idenities and old soldiers, was sec up to further the scheme. A considerable sum has already been promised by old officers.
