OBITUARY.

MR G. A. TOWNSEND, SENR. Another of Mastertoo'a old lers passed &way, yesterday mornjn£f, in the person of Mr G. A. senr. The deceased bad been ailing for about throe months. The Jaie Mr Townsend was 76 years of age, being horn in Gloucestershire, Enelau<l, in 1830. He came out to New Zealand thirtythree years age, aud he spent all his colonial life in the Masterton district. He followed his trade, that of a sarpenter ; until about three months ago, when he was forced to give it up owing to ill health. A good deal of his time was spent in working in Ihe Taueru district. ' Mr Townsend had been a shic's carpenter and/ travelled a great deal, baring many exciting experiences in different parts of the world. Hit ship nan the first to arrive nt Callao in South America, after the great earthquake of 1868 had wrought such havoc in that town. The deoeased worked on many of the buildings iu Mastertp'u ia the early, days,' including S. Matthew's Church, the steeple of which he erected thirty® years ago. Three children (Mr J. Townsend, of Taueru, and Mr 6. Townsend and Mrs W. D. Mcintosh, of Mnsterton) are left to mourn their loss. The funeral will leave, the resiMr G., Townsend, Albert Street, at 2 p.m. to-morrow.
