The orops of hay are said to be exceptionally good in the Masterton district this year. a consignment of trout fry was despatched from Masterton to Mangamaire on Monday. A 650 gallon vat has recently been installed at tbe Rongokokako oheese factory. The Publio Works Department has let a contract for a new observatory at Wellington, whicb is to cost £1,096. There is a dispute at Haunu! over tbe site of a new school which it is proposed to ereat. A petition and counter petition will be presented nVt.be meeting the Education' Board on Thursday. At a meeting of the Committer of the Masterton St. Patrick's Day Sports Association, to be held in the Tecbnioal School building, on Saturday evening, December Btb, th» programme for the next sports meeting will be considered. Carpenter, who some time ago rejoined the literary staff of our evening contemporary, has accepted a position with the New Zealand Herald, whicb paper he, also, rejoins. He will leave this morning for the Northern city. Mr Darpenter carries with him tbe best wishes of many Masterton friends. Tbe Borough Engineer reported at the meeting of . the Masterton Borough Counoil, last evening, that the bast means of keeping worse from the abattoir paddooks would be to grub it out by the roots and then stock the paddocbs. The cost of grubbing and burning would proh ably be at least £soi The Engineer was instructed to arrange for n test of "Lixall" weed destroyer in one paddook at the abattoir. At the meeting of the Fire Brigado last evening Lieut. Matthews, on behalf of the brigade, presented Branchman Jenkins, who was recently married, with a handsome marble clock. In making the presentation Lieut. Matthews referred in eulogistio terms to the manner in wbiuh Branchman Jenkins hadalways carried out his duties as a flremau.' The election of representatives for tbe various Charitable Aid and Hospital Boards in Wellington and tbe Wairarapa will be held shortly, and the following were appointed by the Masterton Borough Council, last evening, to vote at the eleotiona on behalf of tbe Council:— Wellington and Wairarapa Charitable Aid Board, Or E. MoEwen; Wairwapa District Hospital Board, Grs Eton arid Ewingtori;" Wellington Benevolent Society, Mr A. W. Hogg, M. H.tt.; Masterton Hospital Trustees, Or E. McEwen; Pahiatua HospHal Board, Mr Eamee. The fortnightly meeting of tbe Masterton Municipal Pir« Brigade | was held last evening in the Central Station, Captain Jenkins presiding. Apologias for absence were received, f.rpm, Lieut. ,0. A. lowing ton and Fireman b. L. Ewington. The Fire Police wrote asking to be allowed the use of some of the brigade's material for practising with. The request was granted on the same conditions as last year. Secretary Pragnoll reported the result of his recent interview with the Borough Council, which was tioqsidered satisfactory. The discussion on Fireman Selby's motion with reference to musters counting for alarms was deferred .till the next meeting. The brigade decided to provide a seat for the Masterton Part. ( I I • : "1 must congratulate the Town Clerk," said Cr Temple, at the* meeting of tbe Masterton Borough Council, last evening, "on the substantial reduction in the amount of rates outstanding, - but I would like to know what is being done to get in the remainder." Continuing, he said that be would like to see the Council imitate tbe Adelaide City Council, which, it was reported in the papers, had for tbe eighth year in succession collected all the rates owing during the year. He thought that if the rates could not be collected they should be written off. The Towu Clerk stated the Inspector bad recoutly brought a number of "ratepayers before the Court for not paying tboil' rates, and all iiad confessed judgment. He added that the luspeotor was devotiug ail his spare time to collecting rates. It is reported that the blight ha made its appearance among some of tbe early potato crops in the vicinity of Masterton. ,j The attendance at tbe New Zealand Exhibition yesterday totalled 7,592, which brings the total attendance to 327,975. Heron, J.P., occupied the Benob at the Masterton Police Court, yesterday, Three first offend, ers were each fined ss, in default 21 hours' imprisonment, for having been drunk. James Diggs was charged with the theft of £7 from William Barr, and on tbe application of the police a remand waa granted until Saturday.
