MASTERTON WATER SUPPLY.

TESTS IN QUEEN STREET,

The members of the Masterton Municipal Fire Brigade tested the pressure of the water supply in two different portions of Queen Street yesterday afternoon. A hydrant was put ia opposite the Post Offise and 100 ft of hose was run out- With a one-inob nozzle the water reached the height of about 25ft, with a %-incfa nozzle about 45ft, and with a %-inoh- nozzle over 50ft, just touching the Post Office clock. Three hundred feet of hose was thon run out from a hydrant at the Club Hotel cornet, and with a % inch nozzle the water reached over 60ft. From a hundred feet of hose attaoh«d to a hydrant near the Age Office the water reached the height ot about 55ft through a %-mcb nozzle. Three jets were then used simultaneously, and tho water in euch case went up to a height of about 55 feat. A nozzle was tried aft tho end of the 100 ft of hose, and the water reached the flag pole at the top of the Post Office tower. (The top of the pole is 75ft from the ground.) A test was then made near the Ocor dental Hotel, and with four brunches running together the water was found to go up to the roof of the hotel andJJ it would have been possible in case of fire to put a good force of water through thefwindows on the third floor of the hotel. Mr Dobson the Borough Engineer stated to a Wairarapa Ago representative that the pressure was as good as oould be expected under the existing oirnumstanoes. He added that the water supply was all right- but the reticulation was defective. "There was no cause for alarm and the pressure would have been sufficient for an ordinary building on fire. Captain Jenkins stated to a Wairarapa Age representative chat the test bore out his previous 09m plaints that the water supply was inadequate for lire purposes. The guage at the Are station at the commencement of the test showed a pressure of 751bs to the square inch, and during the greßter part of the water was not out £uff from auy of the bncb streets. 1 ,
