CORPORATION YARDS.

DISCUSSION AT THE BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING. The Maaterton Boroußh Works Committee, last evening, considered the question o'f the establishment of corporation yards where the Borough carta, horses, and other plant could be kept The Chairman* (Cr Feist), said be had lately giveutbe matter some consideration. He thought that a piece of land, having an area of about twelve adrea, he* longing to the Cemetery Trustees and adjoining the cemetery, rfopld be suitable for the purpose. He bad ascertained that the land had been leased to Dr W. H. Hosking, but the lease had expired last year The Engineer was of opinion that the Oounoil should seaure the whole or the twelve acres , as the horses could be kept there. If the Council were' inclined to favour the site suggested by ;him, be, as Chairman of the Cemetery Trustees, would call a special meeting of the Trustees and ascertain if they were prepared to lease the whole of the portion of tho site to the Council. Another site that was considered suitable for Corporation yards was the pro- | party belonging to the Trust Lands I Trustees in Bannister iStroet. The land faoing Bannister Street would be too expensive for the purpose, but about two acres at the back, J and faoing a newly-formed street, ' would be suitable. He understood that gthe Trustees might oe erepared to let the two acres at an annual rental of £lO. Personally, he considered the site near the cemetery was the best. Or Ewington thought the cemetery site would be an admirable one. , \ Cr Hoar did not favour having the Corporation yards so near the cemetery. He did not object to the Council securing about thiee acres at the farther end of the reserve near the cemetery. The land immediately adjoining the cemetery might ne takjn at any time and added to the cemetery. Crs Eton und Morris favoured using the Council's own land in Bentley Street for the purpose. Cr Temple considered that the site near the cemetery was. an ideal one fcr Corporation yards. If the Council decided to make use of tun Bentley Street sife several hundred pounds would have to be spent on it. He would like to know where' the money was to come from. Or Moßwen spoke in favour of the site adjacent to the cemetery. Eventually Cr Ewington moved, and Cr MoEwen seoonded, "that the Cemetery Trustees be written to re garding the lease of a pare or the whole of the site adjacent to the cemetery" The motion was carried by four votes to three votes, the voting being—-Ayes: Crs Feist, Temple, MoEwen and Ewington. Noes: Crs 11 oar, Morris and Eton.
