Influenza ia very prevalent in the Mastertin and Eketahuna districts just now. Eight gypsies. arrived in. Masterton by the train from the Sooth last evening. A meeting of the Masterton Trust Land* Trustees will be held on Friday, at 7.30 o'clock, in the Trust otfJoe, Hall Street. The attendance at the New Zea land Exhibition, yesterday, was | 9,281, which* Tifiugs the total to date to 268.090. Mr W. J. Sautiers, of Alfredton has acquired Mr I. M. Greenaway's Glen Aroua estate (Manawatu), comprising 1,550 acres. During the week ended yesterday, states a Dunedin telegram, returns have been reported from 26 dredges, the total yield being 700oz 4dwt 2gr, cr an average of 260z per dredge. The Borough Engineer remarked, at • tho meeting or the Masterton Borough Works Committee, last evening, that there was nothing the matter with the Maßterton water sur/ply at present. At the .ueeting of the Works Committee of the Masterton Borough Council, last evening, the Deputy Mayor (Or Feist) reported that arrangements in connection with the widening of Gross Street were pructioa'ly completed. FACTS ESTABLISHED AT COURT. The R. M.S. Sierra, with British mails of November 3rd, left' Sail Francisco on the 15th at 8 p.m., due date. At tbe MaFterton Police Court, yesterday morning, before Mr E. Q. Eton, J.P., a first offender was fined ss, in default 24 hours' im» prisonment, fur having been drunk. Edward Connell, a second offender, was fined a similar' amount, and John Lawlor was convicted and discharged. "A peculiar phase of the industry has manifested itself at this ventre," reports the Wellington poultry grader. "During. the season under review the volume of business at the depot has been practically nil. This is accounted for by the fact that the local demand has increased to such an extent that there is no surplus for export." William Richardson, appeared before Mr L. J. Hooper, J.P., at the ■Masterton Police Court, yesterday | morning, ou a charge of having attempted to oommit suicide on Monday evening, 'ihe accused appeared to be in a very nervous i state. On tbe application of tbe police a remand was granted until Saturday next in order, to allow the Magistrate to hear the case. Mr J. C, Ewington, who waq authorised by the Masterton Chamber of Commerce to collect information relative to tbe proposal to establish brick works in tbe Masterton district, has obtained clay from three properties in the district, and has furwarded it to Wellington for examination. Mr Ewington hopes to gather some important information bearing on the subject at an early date. In connection with the arrival of the Ventura at Auckland on Sunday night, six dayß behind time, it is interesting to note that already this year the total delays of the San Francisco mail steamers are 35 days. • In the past year the total was sixteen days, while in 1904 they were five days late. The thirtyfive days lost this year are made up as follow:—4th January, three days late; 23rd January, one day; b'th Maroh, one day; 27th March, one day; 23rd June, five days; 12th July, three days; 25th August, five days; 13th September, three days; 29th October, seven days; 18th November, six days. The Christmas season with it* attendant festivities necessitates that those who cater for the public are particularly busy at tbe present time, fond this is the particularly busy time with Mr Burridge, the proprietor of the Eagle Brewery whose bright, sparkling ales are deservedly popular throughout the district. The quarterly summoned meeting of the Stoneheoge Lodge U.A.O.U. was held last evening, Bro. A. O. ) Levien presiding over a large attend-1 ance. Two friends were proposed for initiation. Bro. Marshall, who is at present at the Rotorua Sanatorium, was imported to be progressing favourably. A committee was appoluted to draw up a syllabns for next year, and report to the next meeting. The receipts tor the evening totalled £6O. The Manager of the Gasworks reported to the meeting of the Works Committee of the Masterton Borough Counoil, last evening, that there was nos a sufficient number ■of probable consumers in George and Villa Streets to warrant the extension of the gas mains to those streets. On the suggestion of the Engineer, the Oounoil deoided to lay an inch and a quarter main for six chains in George Street for street lighting purposes. In connection with the proposed widening of Makora Street, it was Teported at the meeting or the Masterton Borough Works Committee, last evening, that the residents in that street, with tbe exception of, one or two, had agree 3 to give tbe<H Council 16ft 6in of land on either aide of the street, for the purpose of [widening the street, on condition that the Oounoil set baok the fences.
