WELLINGTON WOOL SALES
Levin and Company, Limited, Wellington, report as followß re garding Friday's sale:—The first sale of the new Season was held to day at the Town flail, the total offering by the various brokers amounting to 1,500 bales against 1,400 bales last November. Oar catalogue represented 300 bales and individual ostaloguas were all small owing to the reoent broken weather having retarded delivery of wool. There was a very large attendance of buyers from England, the Continent and America, as well as looal operators and great interest was displayed in the progress of the sale. The wool as a whole was better grown than last year, but heavier in grease. There had been, during reoent weeks, some reason to fear that to-day's sale would open badly owing to tne low prices which had been offered privately, for clips of crossbred wools, but the firmness of growers here combined with the improved tone in the central markets as reported by cables during the past week caused values to uome up to a high level and ptioes higher even than vendors ideas were obtained to-day. Halfbreds were strongly sought for and sold up tolled, light Romney Bkirted sold up tolled, and unskirted to Hd. Lincolns and crossbred light in condition sold to 10% d, and heavier condition to 10J£d. As compared with prices realised at the November sale last year there was an advance of %d on half oreds and on fine medium and coarse crosebieds. The following is the range of prices, last year's prices being in parentheses:— Halfbreds, (lOd to aid), lid tolled; superior tine orossbreds, (I0&d to 10% d), lOd to medium crossbreds, to 10d), lOd to 10% d; coarse cross, breds, (9d to 9%d), to 10% d; inferior orossfcrede, (8d to 9d), B}£d to 9J£d; pieces and bellies, (6d to 1%6), 6d to looks, (3d to Aft%), 3d to sd. Dalgety and Company, Limited, report as follows:—Wo held oar first sale of the season in theroonceit room of the Ta*n flail to day, at 2 p.m., when the total offerings from all brokers amounted to 1,550 bales, as compared with 1,400 bales at the corresponding sale of last year. The quantity would have been considerably larger but for the broken weather during the last few weeks. Our catalogue totalled 369 bales, of whioh we sold 356 tales under the hammer. There was a representative attendance of Home, foreign, and local buyers, and competition was keen throughout especially for fine wools. The latest advice from London indicates, at least for the present, a firm market for all classes.
