THREATENING THE PREMIER

William Stevenson Aiokin, sharebroker, for sending a letter threatening the life of the Premier, was -convicted by Justice Edwards, and ordered to come up for sentence if -called upon; also to enter into a bond of £I,OOO, and two sureties of £SOO, to keep the peace for three jeara end not to go beyocd twenty .miles from Auckland. The prisoner's counsel stated that it had come to bis knowledge that the Premier had no objeotion to the prisoner beiug allowed his liberty. The Judge said that the responsibility was on bis shoulders to safeguard the Premier. On a former occasion he sentenced a man to three years for threatening the Premier. In that case Sir Joseph Ward interfered and the man was liberated.
