CHARGES AGAINST BOOKMAKERS.

At the Magistrate's Court to-day, a number of bookmakers wore charged wii.h trespassing on the Ohmtchurch rtic-'course and refusing to quit whim ordered. John Smith was sentenced to one month's imprisonment on each of three charges; W. Blood to one brunt h on each of lour charges, E. J. Mnmien pleaded guilty to four charges. Counsel : for accused said that Marsdfn hud paid ; £SO in fines already, nnd had born', sentenced to two months' imprisonment > in default of payment of a fine of £25Accused had no criminal proclivities outside this fault. Tho Bench said there was no excuse for a man taking no heed of previous punishments. Accused was sentenced to two months' imprisonment om each charge, the terms to be concurrent. Geo- Driver and J. Scatree were fined JEIO each and costs. Alfred i>rake, a first offender, was fined 40s and costs. James Mfttson, A. Butler, 6. Isaacs, and William Barrv were finod £5 each and costs. J. Cuthbertson was sent to gaol for 14 days on each of four charges. John Ross was fined £lO. Several other cases were dismissed.
