ORDINARY MEETING. The ordinary meeting of t;he Masterton Borough Council was held last evening. Or Feist, who hea heen appointed to act us Mayor until the return of Mr J. A. Ronall, ocoul pied the chair, and there w«re also present:—Ors J. 11. Panliug, J. Elliott, F. W. Temple, T. G. Hoar, E, G. Eton and J. G. Ewington. The Managers of the Masterton leohnical School wrote thanking the Council far the grant, of £25 in aid of toe funds of the institution. The Tourist Department wrote forwarding an account lor £l, being expenses inourred by Head Gardener Pearson when be visited Masterton in May last to advise tbe Cdunoilln thi matter of laying out the new coition of the Park. The' account was referred to the Park Committee. A petition was received from ten t-atepayera of South Road asking that the water mains be extended along that street as far as Mr P. Gordon's residence. The oriaiua! petition was a request for the extension of tbe mains along the full length of the street, but the petitioners considered that tne extension of the mains as far bb Mr Gordon's residence would be sufficient. On the motion ot Or . Eton the petition was referred to tb9 Works Committee. A letter was received from Mr J. S. J, Alpegg. drawing the attention of the "Council to tbe faot that the obstruction opposite bis (shop in Lower Queen Street was seriously interfering with bis shop trade. He would not have oomplalned if the work of laying down the culvert across the Makora Stream had been finished in anything like reasonable j t me, but as operations have apparently ceased for an indefinite I period be considered that he should | be entitled to substantial oompeusa l tion. He added that the Uast that the Oounoil oould have done was to have erected a temporary, bridge over tbe creek on his side of' the road, and also a' decent temporary footbridge opposite the footpath, Or Hoar thought tbe matter should be remedied, an Mr Alpasa was not being treated fairly. Or Eton said that, of course, Mr Alpass had no redress as it was not tbe Council's fault. Nevertheless, the Engineer should be asked why the could not be proceeded with. The Engineer stated that he had given instructions for a wider footbridge to be put over the culvert. It was decided io reply to Mr Alpass to that effect. The Chairman reported that be and- Or Pauling had interviewed Mr Cruickshank with reference to tbe water supply at the abattoir, Mr Cruickshank was unwilling to lease or sell the two acres where tbe water springs were situated, but he was prepared to sell the whole block of 30 aores. Mr Stempa had a block of land ou whioh there was also a spring, and he was prepared to sell the Council two acres sit £25 per ac?e. Or Feist considered that the best course for the Oounoil to adopt would be to bay Mr Sfempa's land, but before doing so it would be neoessary for the Engineer and Abattoir Manager to report ou the question. He moved in tha't direction. The motion was oarried. With regard to the application of the Benevolent Sooiety for a further supply of coke, it was decided, not to charge of coke supplied (luting the past but to oharge' for all future supplies. In accordance with his notice of motion Or Ewingtou moved to rescind the previous ' resolution deciding to purchase a road engine from McLaren and Co. (J)r Eton seconded the motion, which, after disoussion, was lobt by flve.votes to two. Or Pauling then withdrew his n,otice of motion with regard to suspending Standing Order 11 for the special purpose of ordering the road maohinery already decided on by £he Oounoil, on the condition that Or Ewingtou would not offer any further objection to the machinery being purchased. The machinery already deoided upon will accordingly be ordered to-day.
