THE Wairarapa Age MORNING DAILY. MONDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 1906.

By the defeat of William Randolph Hearst in his candidature for the Governorship of New York, the United States Dave esoaped a public calamity. A few years ago, when Hearst, an unknown man, startled the publia by trying to seoare the Democratic nomination for the Presidency, people laughed at him. Sinoe then he has showed himself to be a man of some brains and a great deal of energy, if quite without scruples. His bid for the Presidency was sheer impudenoe. His money was flung about quite openly in bis attempt toseoure nomination. "Ihere never has been," said the New York Post at the time, "a case of a man of suoh slender intellectual equipment, absolutely without experience in office, impudently flaunting his wealth before the eyes of the people and saying, 'Make me Pseairtent.' " The Post, which is a leading Demooratia organ, and one of the most responsible and dignified papers in the States, went I further tban this. It declared

btantly that a low voluptuary, seeking to* sting bla jailed sen sea into activity again by seekiug election as President,, was a new horror in American politios. Hearst did not gjfc the nomination; probably he did not expect it.. The advertisement was quite sufficient.. Some moutba ago be was the Democratic oandidafce for the Mayoralty of New York,, and came very noar to securing eleotion. The campaign was a straight* oat issue between Hearst and Tammany, and the oontest was as bitter as a political contest could well be.. The Hearst organs could say nothing bad enough about Tammany and its boss, and when Tammany won by a small margin, Hearst at once de olared that he had been defeated by corruption. But in a few months all was changed. Hearst wanted the Governorship of New York a>3 a step-ping-stone to White Hobse,. and not uaring in the least how he got it,, made an absolutely shameless alliance with Tammany.. Disgusted at this proceeding deoent Democrats refused to. accept him hs a candidate at any puce,, be was obliged to rebort to underhand methods to se oure nomination. The Mew York Herald, describing the convention at Whiob Mr Hearst'a nomination was. carried,, asserted that the atmosphere was tainted through and through with falsehood,, treachery, and deceit.. Nearly every man seems to have his price,, and that it 1» beting paid is an open seoret.. At last,, a few days before the election, the President was moved to interfere,, and to. warn the electors, through his Secretary of State,, of the danger of electing such a man to be Governor.. Mr Roosevelt never interfered in a better oause. Hearst has received a set back for the time,, but to ignore him in the future would be idle.. A cable message last Friday showed that the Republican majority was small t>nd that Hearst is not discomfited. To manage hta huge affairs- as he manages ttgem argnes ability; he is energetic, very wealthy,, unscrupulous, insatiably ambitious,, and possessed of immense power. Such men are not content with one or two defeats,
