DERBY. i HOW THE RACE WAS WON, By Telegraph—Press Association. ! Received November 5, 9.5 a.m. MELBOURNE; Nov. 5. la a drizzling raiu half a dozen candidates for the Derby stripped for the contest. Poseidon, who was a great centra of attraction in the Birdcage, was the picture of condition, and his supporters declined to admit the possibility of his going under. The Now Zealand jockey, Hewitt, had the mount oiij Ellis, but even that tailed to ga|n the Ilotoblri,s9 colt muoh support.' Ellis was the first to take advantage of the start,- and, with lolaire, Bcoran, ind Poseidon in attendance, swept out of the straight and rattled along the riverside with a substantial lead. This lead was, however, reduced before Iho abattoirs were reached, where the favourite bad moved up on lolaire, the pair being at tho heels of Ellis. At this point Autonious made a forward mov« and took the vacancy alongside of Rooron, while Poseidon was just in the wake of the leader. Ellis held command until heads were turned for hoiuß. Then the severity of the pace rjegan to tell i its tale, and the son of Hotchkiss retired, leaving the favourite at the head of affairs. Then the shout arose that the "favourite walks in," but meanwhile Antonious had drawn up, and just as Poseidon took charge Antonious oaue out in pursuit. Clayton, on Poseidon, quickly took in the situation, and drove the favourito along Antonious was not to be denied, and in h few strides drew level. Entering on the last furlong, Antonious, on tho outside, was going apparently fcetter than Poseidon, but when called upon again the latter responded with all his bulldog aourage, and in an exciting hand-to hand engagement for nearly a furlong gradually shook Antonious off and beat him by a length'and a quarter. Booran was a bad thud, and lolaire last. It was a fast and true ruu race, and beyond question the best horse won,
