OBITUARY.
LORD GRAN BROOK,
Received October 31, 8.30 a.m. LONDON, October 30. The death is announced of the Earl of Cranbrook. (Deceased, who was in his 83rd year, was educated at Shrewsbury and Oxford, and was afterwards admitted as a barrister and practised for some years. He unsuccessfully contested Bradford in the Conservative interest in 1847, but was returned in 1856 for Leamister, which he continued to represent till 1865, when he was chosen to oppose Mr Gladstone for the Oxford University seat, which he won after an exciting contest by 180 votes. In the following year, on the formation of Lord Derby's third Administration, he was appointed to Cabinet rank, and he continued to be a member of various Conservative Ministries down to 1892. He was raised to the peerage as a Viscount in 1878, and croated an Earl in 1892. Lord Cranbrook was a capable administrator and a powerful debater.)
