MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

ORDINARY' ME^'IING.

TLe Mayor (Mr J. A. Kenall) presided at the ordinary meeting of the Masterton Borough Council lßst evening. There were also present— Ore J. H. Pauling, J. Elliott. F. W, Temple, T. G. Boar, E. G. Eton, J. 0. Ewington, E. Feist, E. MoEroen, and W. Morris.

Messrs Seatou and Sladdeu wrote* stating that they had received instructions from the Trustees of the Renall Estate to prooeed with the construction of the road through the Ngaumatawa Block, connecting Renall and Villa Street?. The boundary of the Renall Estate is the centre of the and the Borough property joined this boundary from the other side of the stream, it would be necessary to either construct a culvert or a ford over or through the stream, aad it was thought only right that the Council should agree to contribute one-half of the cost of the same to give access to Villa Street. The Council decided to pay half the cost of the culvert. The Trust Lands iliustees wrote agreeing to the proposition to divert the Albert Street creek from its present course along the water tables. The Engineer was instructed to proceed with the work at once.

The South Wairarapa Hospital Trustees wrote ginforming the Council that a meeting of representatives of the contributing bodies to the hospital would be bald at Grey town on December 2nd for the purpose of eleoting trustees to the Hospital for the year 1906-7. Mr J. D. Heagerty was appointed to represent the Masterton Borough Council at the meeting* The Department of Agriculture wrote suggesting that the Counoil consider the question of deolaring "broom" a noxious weed within the Borough. No action was taken in the matter. The Chamber of Commeroe wrote drawing the Council's attention to the danger to life and limb caused by the trains thunting across the AKura Road at.the railway station, and requesting the Council to join in urging upon the Miuistei of Railways tne necessity for the promised increased accommodation ah tbeMasterton station.. On the motion of Cr Ewington the Counoil decided to co-operato with the Chamber in urging on the Railway Department the danger caused by shunting over the Akura Road; also to .use avery endeavour to prevent having the "back-shunt" included in tlie proposed new railway yards. The Abattoir Manager wrote stating that the deepening of the well at the abattoir had not improved the water supply, and be found that the race water was not suitable for dressing carcases and did not keep when stored in the well and tanks. The matter jyas left in the hands of the Engineer. %

A petition was received from ten ratepayers of Colombo Road South asking the Council to improve the road betweon the Makora and Kuripnni streams. The petition was refetred to the Works Committee. When the report of the IJWorks Committee came up for adoption Cr Ewington moved that before accepting any tender fur road machinery the specifications of the eiißines submitted by McLaren and E. H. Anderson lor a traction engine and convertible road roller be refefred to the Inspector of Machinery or some other competent poison for a report. Cr Eton seconded the motion, which was lost by eight votes to two votes. The report was then adopted. Cr Ewington then gave notice to move to rescind the resolution passed. Or Temple moved that the Engineer be instructed to write in the morning ordering a McLaren, engiue. The Mayor ruled that the motion was not in order, as Cr Ewington had already put in his notice of motion. Cr Morris then moved to suspend Standing Order 11, but the Mayor ruled that in order to suspend a. Standing Order a notice of motion must be put in two days be-, fore the meeting. A specml meeting co'ild bo held to decide the, matter. Cr Pauling then moved that a special meeting of the Council be' held on Thursday evening to decide, tne matter, but Cr Ewington pointed out that his notice of motion was dated to come up fordiscussion on November 13tb. The matter then dropped.. Crß Pauling, Elliot, Hoar and Temple, were appointed a committee to go into matters relating, to the using of the w^igh.-bridge.
