Ihere was a good attendance, and epfeolation was brisk. The principal event, the Pearce Uandioap, was won comfortably at the finish by Ellerton, who had occupied a prominent position in the earlier, stages of the race. Pawa, who annexed the Petoue Hack Hurdles, finished with remarkable gamenosa, having been badly staked in the shoulder at the threefurlong posl, which necessitated 'Stitches being put ia the wound. THE WELLINGTON MEETING. There was a large attendance of the public at Trentham, on Saturday. The weather was all that could be wished, and there being no wind tn contend against some very fast times were registered. Racing commenced with the Petone Hack Hurdles, which resolved itsulf into a fine set-to between Sardonyx, 11.4, and Pawr* 10.3, the latter winning by half a length in the exceptionally fast time of 2min 46 see for a mile and a half. Of the eight starters in the Tararua Hack I Handicap only Intelligence and Kufca werejbacked spiritedly. Ihe firstnamed won comfortably from Kuku, and backers of the Hon. J. D. Ormond's mare had to be satisfied with a dividend of £1 12s. Only three faced the starter for the Juvenile Haudiuap, which was won rather easily' by Happy Maid, by Soult—Merry Maid, trained by J. Pros Her. The Boyne did not shape as well 83 expected, while tho Stepniak coit, Prism, was too big in condition to see tho distance oat, A fine field of eight went out to contest the Pearoe Handicap, of 1 mile. Zimmerman was made favourite, with Ghoorka, Landmen) and Olanobattan also well supported. When the barrier tapes were released Zimmerman was in the act ci rearing, and was oonseqnently badly, left, thus completely spoiling his chance of winning. When heads were turned for home Ellerton, Clauohattan, Ghoorka and Mystification all appeared to have winning nhnncee, but a little further Ellerton shot to the front, and in a good finish with Ghoorka won by a length. Prieco was galloping fast at the finish, and ran into third place, just in front of Laudwern, who raced better than on the first day. The Hutt Park Handicap resulted iu another surprise, Medallist, Boomerang, De L Witte, Captain

Shannon and Roaogrove were loyally backed in this order. Boomerang and Captain Shannon out out tbe running to the borne turn, wnere tbe field uloaed up, and Flotilla took charge of affairs. Going on full of running tbe Torpedo mare won by two lengths from Cap tain Shannon. Flotilla's supporters gained the good dividend of £l4 lis. The favourite again went down in tbe Spring Trial, in which Strathflllan and Truthful finished firßfc and seoond, while the favourites, Saga and Kjtchen Maid, were third and fourth. Splendid Idea scored an easy win in the Kuahiue Haok LI audi cap, carrying 9.1, and running six furlongs In lmin 1G 3-ssec. The meeting was brought to a oonclu sion with the Nainai Handicap. Ballarat and Golden Gate were very solidly supported. Tbe latter got away well from tbe barrier, and gave his opponents little ohance of catching him. Ridden right out Marguerite got into second place, w'th tho favourite, Lkllarat a fair third. The meeting was a pro nouneed success. 'i'be Club has now bad four meetings at Trentham, and the change from the Hutt to that locality has proved to be in tbe right direoUon. The secretary, Mr A. E. Whyte, is distinctly progressive, and is backed up by officials who are always ready to study the best interests of the Metropolitan body. A first-class programme is to be put before owners end tbe public for the Cup meeting in January next, and it is confidently expected that the number that will then assemble will be fully as large as at tho opening of the new oourßß. TUB NEW ZEALAND CUP. The further payment on Friday night reduced the field for the New Zealand Cup to 16. The acceptors are a sound lot, with perhaps two exceptions, and it is probable lhat twelve will see the post. Of those now in, Gnoorka, Martello, St. Joe, Landwem and Star Rose, were seen out at the Wellington meeting. Martello won the Wainui I Handicap, of 7 furlongs, in good style, but little idea could be gained as to whether he can run a good two miles. Ghoorka ran a very salid mile on Saturday wheu he finished within a length uf Ellerton in the Pearce Handicap, in lmin 41seo. The black horse is a stayer, and in a weak field must be giren a chance in the big event. Paritutu, 8.5, is in good form, and his party are very confident that he will win. Lyrist is said to be well, and on ao3ount of the recent success of the Ormond stable is sure to be spiritedly supported right up to the day of tho raoe. Letherin is doisg satisfactory work at Kiccarton, and Armistice will be bowling along on the training tracks there this week. Multifld is expected to stand the windingup gallops, and the Auckland representative, Iroumould, will be started if bis party consider his ohance is bright on the day. Makaroff, Landwern, Stepdancer, Lapland, Notus and Blytbenaid would probably be suited by a shorter distance than two miles, while Star Rose, served by a ligbt weight, may run more prominently than is generally expected. The training operations during the week may thro* more light on the chances of the various candidates, and the reports of the work executed by tbe favourites are sure to be eagerly awaited. THE MASTEKTON MEEILNG. With 80 acceptances for the seven events on the first day the meeting should be a decided success. A number of visiting horses have already arrived, and the work at the coarse up to Wednesday morning should be of an interesting nature. Sonre really good contests may confidently be looked for, especially in the Hack events, in which backers will not have easy tasks to select wiuneis. The Maaterton Cup should result in a close race as several of , the entrants are capable of running the distance out in good style. Anticipations as tu probable winners on the first day will appear on Wednesday.
