THE WELLINGTON MEETING. Favoured with typical spring weather on Wednesday, a large ■number of the publio assembled at Trentbam to take part in tbe meeting. The course and various enclosures were in splendid order, the grass having thickened considerably of late and covered tbe bare spotn noticeable at tbe winter fixture. Tbe Wellington Garrison Band played a much appreciated programme of rausio, and assisted considerably towards the enjoyment of tbe meeting. Taken altogether the racing was of a very interesting nature, some fine finishes being witnessed during the afternoon. Proceedings commenced with tbe Ootober Hurdle Race, for which Rookby, trained by A. Hall, and Hydrosoope were greatly fancied. The latter fell, r.fter jumping too big, at tbe back'of the course., while Rookby did not show to advantage. Served by bis light impost, and well ridden by MoConnon, Pawa aoconnted for Sardonyx in tbe run home, and soored comfortably. Sardonyx has furnished into a line stamp of a hurdler, and as he is a splendid fencer should win good races dnrinu the season. Seven proved sprinters lined out for the Shorts Handicap. Declination was made a strong favourite, while Ballarat, Medallist and Captain Shannon carried the confidence of their respective stables. The race was one of the best yet seen on the course, for two chains from the winning post tho horses t were nearly in a line right across the course, and it was difficult to tell which had the advantage. Opposite the People's Stand Medallist shot i
ont and beat tbe fast finishing Declination by less than half a length. The latter started slowly and was last until entering the straight. The way Mr fiidwiU's mare finished gained her many supporters for the Stewards' Handicap at the Canterbury Meeting. A field of thirteen first class wanks . competed in the Rimutaka HandiJ I onp, William being made favourite, with Intelligence the next be t backed. A good race resulted in the latter, a three year-old Ally •by Birkenhead—lndustry, winning by lees than a length from Rosegrove. The winner showed a lot of paoe, and should soon get into open com pany. Matakokiri made his re appearance in this -race after the winter spell, but made a poor showing. For the event of the day, the : Wellington Handicap, ten • horses faced tbe starter. Among these were no less than ! five New Zealand Oup horsoE, and great interest was evinced iu their running. Frisco, from F. Tilloy's redoubtable stable, and Zimmerman were nearly equal lavouutes, Booraoinng, MystifJca tion, and Gboorka also being spiritedly backed. Boomerang aud Bourraaqne out out tbe running for seven furlongs, when Zimmerman joined the first named. The pair entered the home turn together, but a hundred yards further on Boomerang was done with, and Zimmerman led a closed up field until a couple of chains from the post, when Glanohattan shot out, and in a good finish beat' the Hon. J. D. Ormoud's horse by a neck. If the latter had been made a little more use of in the run hone, he would have won, but when tackled by Olanohattau be could not be got along, quickly enough. Only four contested the Flying Handicap, the Hon. J. D. Ormond's uolden Gate, by San, Francisco—Rote, winning in good style. The winner is a fine stamp ot a horse showing both size, quality and galloping ability. The WelJesley Stakes brought out seven highly bred two-year-olds. On the strength of hwr performances at Hawke's Bay recently, Eona was installed a big favourite. This Birkenhead filly hopped away quickly, and with a fine dash of paoe led tbe field right to tbe post, winning by a length from Mr W. E. Bid bill's San Franclspo nolt. Elevation, who was putting in good work at the finish. *» big field of twelve good performers went out for tbe Wainui Handicap, including the New Zealand Cup horses St. Joe, Wirrall and Martello. A good race resulted In the latter winnina by threequarters of a length from Aeolus. Wirrall showed a lot of temper before the race, andi failed to run prominently. St. Joe, who looks lusty and?well, finished just behind the placed horses. Exmoor and Aboriginal, who were expected to show up prominently, finished in the ruck. 'Tbe Spring Hack Handicap, of five furlongs, brought the day's racing to a ounoluslon. Sherlock Holmes and Lady Beresford were spiritedly backed. The first-named was iu front to the turn, where Lady Beresford deposed him. Halfway down Pytoheletf got to the front, and in a good finish won by, a length. The meeting' will be remembered principally on aooouut of the success aohieved by the Hon. J D. Ormond, who soored four wins out of six starts.
