MOUNT HOLDSWORTH.
IMPROVING THE TKAOK. A meeting of the General Committeo appointed to deal with the question of improving the track up Mount Holdswortb was held in the Borough Council Chambers last evening. Gr J. 0. Ewington, Chairman of the Park Committee, presided, and there were about twenty others present.
Mr D. MoQregor, senr., suggested that a canvassing committee should be appointed in order that a systematic canvass of the town and district could be made. Be felt sure that the appeai of the committee for funds would be liberally responded to. Mr J. Hives thought that it would be preferable if subscription lists were left at certain places in the town so that people oould give sums of money witnout being canvassed.
Mr W. H. Jackson suggested that a subscription list should be placed in each of the newspaper offices in Masterton.
It was finally decided that the General Committee be a canvassing committee. It was also decided to issue subscription lists signed by the Chairman and Secretary. Mr A. W. Hogg, M.H.R., forwarded a letter from the Premier with reference to the matter. Sir Joseph Ward stated that he regretted that ho oould not put any amount on the Tourist and Health Resorts estimates for the improvement of the track up Mount Holdswortb. He thought that the matter was one for tbe Roads Department, and he had brouaht it under the notice of that Department. Mr Hogg suggested in his letter to the Committee tbat tbe matter should be more fully explained to the Minister. A general discussion took plnoe on what improvements were required to tbe track and the best means of carrying them out. It was pointed out tbat a bridge suitable for horse traffic was required over the Maungaterero Stream. The olass of bridge generally approved of for the purpose wss a suspension bridge. £n order to see what was required in the way of improvements, it was deoided that a party, under Mr C. Bannister, should nsuend the mountain on November 9tb. Messrs C. Bannister, D. McGregor, H. Evans and J. Dagg were appointed a committee to make arrangements for tbe visit to tbe mountain.
