The annual meeting of the members of the Masterton Lawn Tenuis (Jlub will be held in the Courthouse,, at 8- o'clook, this evening. At the Masterton Police Court,, yesterday morning,, before Mr E, G. Eton,. J..P.,. two first offenders were convicted and discharged for having been drunk. Mr S. Mawley wrote to the meeting of the Masterton County Council, yesterday,, asking permission to erect a telephone line on the Waugaeha Road.. The application was granted. The Masterton Lawn Tennis Club will open the season on the Club's Courts aa soon as the Courts are ready—probably ou Saturday,. October 20th.. A Sydney cablegram states that four of the New Zealand bowlers visited Manly on Wednesday and played a rink,, sniftering defeat by two points.. Messrs- Asbnry,, Henton and Firth,, flaxmillers of Alfredton/japplied to the Masterton County Council, at its meeting yesterday,, for a lorrey license. The application was granted. Dr. Cowie delivered his sixth leo- , fcure to the members of the Y..M.U..A. Ambulance Corps,, last evening. Practical work was done in bandaging and stretcher drill. The Doctor as accorded a hearty vo;e of thanks for his lecture. A letter was- received by the Masterton County Council,, yesterday, from the Eaiwbata branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union,, requesting the Council to declare unhinau a noxious weed. The Council decided that it could not see its ft ay to accede to the request. A letter was received at the meeting of the Masterton County Council,, yesterday, from the' Akitio County Council,, consenting to oontribur.e up to£lsin improvements on the Waihoki Road, west uf the Masterton County boundary. It was deoiued to tbank the Akitio Council- for their offer. An Oamaiu telegram states that John Findlay was formerly charged, yesterday, with the murder of Mr Rennie, and was remanded till, the 19th inst.. None of the missing property has been recovered.. There is said to be little evidence to connect Findlay with the crime,, except that his departure from the vicinity on the night o£ : the rnuider was alleged to he suspicious.. Tenders were accepted by the Masterton County Council, yesterday, a* follow*.—Erection of a bridge over the Taueru River on the Glau-donald-—Wairere Road,. Mr W.. D. McCalmont. £1,193; sixteen chains of re-forming and metalling on the Upper Opaki Road, Mr S. Larcombe, £49 10s per chain. The offer of Belßhawe Bros, to re-form and metal 35 ohains of the Hutewai Road with burnt papa, at £7 per chain, was accepted. At St. Mark's Churah, Carterton, on Wednesday, Mr W» J. Smith, second son of Mr W. J, Smith, of Dalefield, was married to Miss Eileen E. M. Parker, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs F. Parker, of Belvedere. Misses Olive and Kathleen Parker were the ( brjdesmaids f and Mr M. Hurley waß best man. The wedding cake, whioh was a splendid sample of Hie confeotioner'a art, was supplied by Mr K. Eventden. Accounts amounting to £773 2s 6d were passed for payment. The total area that will come under the Land Bill's national endowment scheme is 13,580,780 acres, which will bring in a total rental of i 123,436. Of this acreage, 11,494,277 acres are pastoral runs, with a reutal of £73,749, small grßzing runs have an area of 1,376,679 acres and a rental of £27,984, miscellaneous leases aggre gate 637,124 aores and £12,903 in rents, and occupation leases in mining distric's (23,141 acres; bring in rents amounting to £1,367. The pastoral ind small grazing runs iu the Cheviot settlement have a total area of 47,662 acres (1,642 being pastoral), and biing in a total rent of £7,096 (£193 for pastoral runs). In addition to the 13,580,786 aores above referred to, there were 2,206,517 acres available for settlement in August last, and 1,037,242 aores , not yet surveyed. This made a total area of 16,824,545 aoren to •jcme under the Bill for national endowment purpuses. Drs Cook and A. Hoeking reported nases of scarlet fever at Laosdowne and Wangaehu to the , meeting of the Masterton County Counoil yesterday. At the Fairview Rifle Range, yesterday, Mr W. Winslade scored six "bull's eyes" and an "inner" out of seven shots, at the 500 yds range, making 34 points out of a possible 35 points. The Masterton County Counoil have decided that in future where private telephone lines are erected vrithiu the County a copy of the aost of the ereotion of suah lines must be supplied to the Counoil. Mr B. A. Parker, champion tennis player of New 'Zealand, ban promised a trophy valued at 30s, to be awarded to the winner of the Men's Championship Singles, at the next open tournament, held by the Masterton Tennis Club. Mr B. P. Hansen wrote to the meeting of the Masterton County < Council, yesterday, asking the Council to take steps to remove slips on the Rakaunui Road (Waterfalls). Cr Holmes-Warren reported that the Engineer was attending to the matler. An Association message from Suva states that the Legislative Council, which is holding its first meeting since Mr Seddon's death, reoorded its profound regret at his untimely death,, and expressed deep sympathy with his family and with the people of New Zealand. At Pahiatua, on. Tuesday, Miss Betsy Aivilde Christiansen, second daughter of Mrs O. A. Christiansen, was married to Mr Herbert Bond, of Pahiatua. It was decided not to grant permission.. Mr F.. W. Paton, chief tally clerk for the Tyser Shipping Company, died in Wellington on Wednesday night. Mr Paton was a well-knowu figure on the wharf, where he bad been engaged for a number of years. Before coming to New Zealand he saw military servioe in India, being there at tne time of the mutiny. At the meeting of the Finance Committee of the Masterton County* Counoil, yesterday, it was decided to inform the Roads Department that the Counoil had no funds at its disposal for the purpo e of assisting to re-construct the bridge over the Tiraumea River, on the Hutewai Road,, and to point out that as the bridge was destroyed prior to th& road beipg handed over to the Council the department should provide the full amount. Mr Richard Poole, a gardener, had an unenviable experience on Sunday afternoon at Napier. When near the junction of Milton and Burlington Roads he wab suddenly and ferociously attacked by a large black dog, whioh bit him on the side of the mouth and chin, inflicting wounds of a serious nature. So fierce was the onslaught that Poole was unable to tree himself from the dog until he reoeived assistance from another pedestrian. Mr Poole had subsequently to proceed to Dr. Moore's surgery, where several stitches were put in the wounds. The Council of the Hawke's Bay Acclimatisation Sooiety, last evening, considered a proposal made by the Government to form a new acclimatisation district, including the West and East Taupo Counties, and to place the same under the control of the Tourist Department. The members forwarded a unanimous protest against the proposal on N the grounds that after flfkeen or twenty years successful work in acclimatising fish and stocking the rivers, the Department would step in and reap the benefit of their work in the form of license fees.—Association.' The Albion E'ootball Club held , their t6nth annual social and dance in the Forester's Hall, last evening. There were about 50 couples present , and danoing was kept up till an early hour this morning. First-class music was supplied by Messrs F. MoKenzie (piano) and Reihana Boyes (violin). , An excellent supper was provided fcy the Ladies' Committee. The M's.C. were "Messrs O. Oorbett, W. A. Hogg, J. Bradbury, I. O'Connor *and F. O'Uomor. During the evening the medals won by the members .were presented. Hhe secretaries, Messrs O. Oorbett and F. O'Connor, carried out their duties in a capable manner, aud the sucoess of the social was largely due to their efforts.
