THE NORTUN-HAYNES CASE.

DEFENDANT'S CHARGES SUBSTANTIATED.

Received October 6, 2.15 p.m. SYDNEY, October 6. The jury in the Norton-Haynesr case were locked up for seventeen hours/' By agreement it was arranged' that a majority verdict should be delivered. The jury found that Haynea' charges were substantiated as follow: (1) Wife beating (utjnnimously); i2) that Norton became possessed of the "Troth' by fraudulent means (nine votes to three); (3) blackmailing (ten votes to two);. (4) incitement to crime (nine votes to three;; (5) Uiohu's death (ten votes to two). The Judge, addressing Havnes,. said: "You nro acquitted."

While [the barque Wooilahra, which was being towed to New- . castle, was off Nnran Head, the second mate, named Raudla, rushed to the side of the vessel and jumped overboard. He was drowned before assistance could be rendered. He had been despondent.

DEPORTATION OF KANAKAS,

BRISBANE, October 6. The deportation of kauakas will commence next week, when ono hundred leave for the Solomon Islands by steamer. There are about 3,500 to be repatriated. About two-thirds go to the Solomon Islands and the rest to the Hebrides. The oontraofc price for delivering them is £5 10a per head to the Solomon Islands, and £5 15s to the Hebrides.

Thence he returns to Australia, finally leaving about Uecember 12tb, sn as to reaoh England in time for tho opening of the ordinary session of Parliament.
