THE MARLBOROUGH MEETING
(By Zetland)
The Mfirlborough Racing Club was favoured with exceptionally fine weather for its Spring Meeting on Wednesday nnd Thursday. The attendance on both days waa satisfactory, the arrangements generally were up-to-date and the racing track was in fine order. Contrary fco expectations the starting barrier was not used, and the stnrter was not altogether successful in his department, soveial of the despatches being of a straggling order, while there were several inß'nncea of horses beiug left several longthe. Tho meeting was admirably conducted, the officials and secretary (Mr Grilliths) looking well after the pleasure of tho visitors. The programme on Wednesday opened with the Hack Hurdles, for which Black Squall, Kaingatabi, Coxswain and Gyrus nta; tod. The firet named wos sore, and failed to run promiuontly. Coxswain mado most of the rumuuß, but before entering tho homo stretch Kaingntahi oamo away and snored in good style. Seven candidates lined out for the Maiden l-luok Knot l , the four-year-old Chief Officer winning easily from Lawn Rose. Marstone wn& scratched for tho Blenheim Handicap, leaving six to contest the eveut. Roaeal, looking particularly well although ho had only corno off the Nelson boat that morning, was installed a strong favourite, Bonheur and White Riboon also being welt supported. White Ribbcn was responsible for the pace for soveu furlongs, when Bonheur raced to the front and in a good finish with Rose Fetal won by half a length. Roseal was blocked when putting in his run and finished fourth. PjOr the Welter llaok the Qreytown-owned Silken Rein went out a warm favourite, and won in good style from Highland Fling, a fine looking colt by Multiform—Marion. This oolt can be considerably improved in condition, and should sTore before the season is for advanced. After the Trot had been won by Torpedo Bill, the Spring Hack Handicap came on for decision. Silken Rein and The Voucher were solidly backed, and in a good finish the Saracen filly scored by a head from Error, who ran tho best race of his career. Rose Petal proved too good at tho weighta in tho Flying Handicap for White Ribbon nnd Miretta, and the Eleotrio Hactt Handicap proved a good thing for Lacy, an aged gelding by Reflector—Miss Luoy. The Second Hack Hurdles wqs won comfortably by Bandmaster, capably' ridden by T. Pritchard. Gyrus aiiain jumped badly, and Kaingatahi appeared to be feeling the effects of the first day's race. The Voucher (list 101b) was made a strong favourile for the Highweight. In n vigorous finish Truthful boac the mare by a short head and paid the good price of £l3 19s. Only threo were saddled up for the Riverlauds Handicap, and Bonheur ropoatod her first day's performance by winning. Roseal found the distance rather too short, Has was putting in good work at tho finish. This son of Handsome Jack is in good racing condition, and may score at Otaui next week. Lacy had very little trouble to win the Hack Scurry, ruumng the half-mile in 50sec. fctrathflllan and Highland Flm/ were unrnly at the post or would have made a good finish of it. * The dividend of the moetins, £25 Is, was paid out on Jewess, Winner of the Second Trot. For the Railway Hack Handicap Silken Rein failed to give Marstone 101b, and the latter won by a head, with Error close up third. White Ribbon got away well in the Telegraph Handicao and won nicely from Miretta. The only other starter, Rose Petal, got away badly, and failed to quite catch the leaders. The meeting was brought to a conclusion with the Hack Welter, for whiah Sorapiron Jack was the popular fancy. Laoy, however, was destined to oontlnue hia victorious career, and won easily from the favourite.
