THE MELBOURNE MYSTERY.
Received October 4, 9.17 a.m. MELBOURNE, October 4. Owing to the quantity of remains found in the Albert Park lake the theory is there were two victims, one of whom is supposed to have teen a woman. Received October 5, 12.40 a.m. MELBOURNE, October 4. A further discovery of ribs with flesh attached has been made in Albert Park lagoon. It transpires that some time ago sever*! boys found some ribs in the lagoon, and used the flesh for fishing bait, thinkine it was refuse from a butcher's shop.
LAND TAX REVISION. Received October 4, 9.17 a.m. MELBOURNE, October 4. Mr Bent, the State Premier, states that the time has arrived when a revision of the land tax shall be made. He regards the valuations iu some instances as ridiculously low. AN ORDER DEFIED. Received October 4, 9.17 a.m. SYUNEY, October 4. The steamer Lord Antrim, which was detained by the navigation authorities owing to defective lifesaving guar, put to sea, bound for Melbourne, in defiance of the order for hei detention. PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH. Received October 4, 9.17 a.m. SYDNEY, October 4. The Rev. Dr. Bruce has sailed for Auckland to attend the jubilee celebration of the Presbyerian Church. DEATHS PROM PLAGUE. Received October 4, 9.17 a.m. SYDNEY, October 4. The health authorities have been advised that two deaths from plague have occurred in New Caledonia sincß September 24tb. THE NORTON-H A YNLS LIBEL CASE. Received October 4, 11.20 p.rr. SYDNEY, October 4. The Norton-Baynes libel case was oontinued to-day. Dr. Riddell, who attended Grobn, stated that the man was organically diseased, and a chrouid aloobolist. Ho examined him after death, and saw no signs of violence. Though Grobn died of heart failure he gave a certificate. He was not informed that the man bad been struck with a bottle. Nothing was said to awaken the slightest suspicion that the man did not die a natural death. Norton in the box said that the statement that he struck Grobn with a bottle was a downright, absolute and deliberately concocted lie. Sergeant Mc.Kie, who was present at the medieni examination, said that the dootor did not turn back the man's bair to see if there was a wound on the scalp. Witness saw no bloodstains on the body.
THREE MEN DROWNED. Received October 5, 12.40 a.m. SYDNEY, October 4. There are heavy floods in various parts of the oountry. While rescuing cattle surrounded by flood waters at Oadia, in the OraDge district, three men, named Ryan, Tooakins, and Sara, were drowned. EARTH TREMORS. Received October 4, 10.21 a.m. PERTH, October i. An earth tremor of intense severity was reoorded by the seismograph yesterday. The preliminary tremor commenced at 10.3 a.m. Long waves followed five rainates later. Therefore the centre of the disturbance could not have been very far distant—say, between two hundred and three hundred degrees 6*f the arc. There were t*o maxima tremors respectively— at 10.18 and 10.21 o'clock, and at these times the pendulum swung right across the Aim. The whole disturbance la&ted two hours. '
