THE CATASTROPHE IN CHILI.

* (Per Mail Steamer Sierra). AUCKLAND, October 2. According to a despatch from Santiago, a conservative estimate places tiie property loss at Valparaiso from earthquake and fire ■at two hundred million dollars. The loss in the rural districts will be immense, as not only residences of landed proprietors, but huts of labourers have been completely demolished, and in many places bridges, fences, telephone and telegraph polea have been thrown •down. Valparaiso, is the great seaport of the Republic, and its commerce exceeds that of any Pacific port, except San Francisco. Ttie entire lower part of the city is completely aestroyed. Heavy rains were still falling at the end of August, adding to the misery. Donations for the relief of the suffeiers are arriving from all parts of the world.
