By Telegraph—Press Association. AUCKLAND, September 29. A man, named John Joseph O'Gonnell was* brought in from prison yesterday to answer six charges of false pretences. He pleaded guilty in each case. SubInspector Gordon said accused represented himself as a farmer, or as a man who had just sold a farm, or who was about to purchase one. Then, after spending a few shill iuga, he would suddenly discover that he was short of change, and produce a cheque to be cashed. The plan Kouerally worked. At Porter's, where he obtained board and lodgings, he entered iuto a coutraot to supply the landlady with butter and eggs from "his farm" at Tamaki. In another inatanca he professed to have sold a farm at Stratford, and in other instances to have bought farms at Kumeu and Henderson. Dis Worship sent acoused to gaol for six months, to begin at the end of the sentence he is'now serving. Ihomas Moororoft, a baker, technically described as a "faotory occupier," was charged before Mr Dyer, at the Police Court, yesterday, with having failed to beep a wages book and overtime book. Mr J. C. Martin defeuded and pleaded guilty to each charge. He stated that the proceedings were taken by the faatory inspector, ana it was perfeotly clear that the necessary books had not been kept. It was an oversight. Mr E. A. Le Oreo, of the Labour Department, said the keeping of wages and overtime hooks wos oqo of the most important features of the Aot, and without this provision it would be impossible to regulate the conditions between employer and employed without confusion. A fine of £1 and Us uosts in each case was imposed.
