GAMBLING.
On next sitting day Mr Aitkeu, M.U.R., intends to pJaoe the following question to the Premier:— In view of the following faots, namely—(l) That it iB universally recognised that the passion for gambling is spreading swiftly in the oolony: and (2) that the evils thereby caused ore exceedingly grave—judges of tho Supreme Court, as well as many other persons capable of forming an unbiassed opinion, having testified that gambling has -becoiie a serious menace to the moral, social, and commercial prosperity of the community; and (3) that a large and influential deputav tion reoently waited on the Premier to urge the Government to pass certain amendments of the gaming laws, with a view to the restriction, and, if possible, suppression cf the prevalent gambling praotioes; and (4) that the deputation was favourably received by the Premier, who expressed himself as sharing tho alarm felt by the deputation, stated that he had been Informed that no less a sum than two million one hundred • thousand pounds had passed hands in gambling transactions in one year in Wellington alone, and promised that as far as lay in bis power he would take steps to mitigate the evils brought under his notioe. In view of these facta, will the Premier explain the action of the Government in their deoison to foster the gambling snirit, and lend it the sanction of the Stale, by authorising an art union in connection with the Exhibition Bhortly to be held in Ohriatohui'ob. 0 CUTLER HASTINGS, TUB I'OPOLAB AMEEiCAN PBAMATIC ACTOB, FOKMEBLY.
