In the House of l-Sepreßentatives, on Wednesday, the Minister of Health was questioned by Mr T. Mackenzie regarding the propriety of shortening the hoars of nurses in mental hospitals. The Hon. Mr Fowlds replied:—The question refers to nurses on night duty. Over and above the hours giveu, a quarter of an hour is added for time sprint in the inevitable overlaDping of duties when the night staff goes off and the day staff comes on. It must be remembered that eighty days' (net) leave on full pay is granted in the year, and, deducting this, it makes the hours about eipht hours and a third. Further, the oharge night nurses gets <£s a year extra allowance, and the juniors are required to be on night duty for only six months in three years. Many prefer night duty, and, if it can be so arranged, are allowed to continue for a longor period at their own option.
