CRETE.
PRINCE GEORGE'S DEPARTURE. Received September 27, 8.40 a.m. CANDIA, September 26. Prinoe George departed from Crete in a Greek warship. British bluejaokets, with maohine guns were landed at Holepa to overawe the Cretans, who desired Prinoe George to remain. Several Cretans were killed in a conflict which occurred. Detaobments of ft'renoh and Italian troops have landed to maintain order. (Prince George resigned the post of High Commissioner of Crete early this month. The resignation was in consequence of the protecting Powers adopting recommendations of thejjMixed Commission appointed to make suggestions for tiie better government of Crete, The recommendations of the Mixed Commission dealt with the re-organisation of the gendarmerie, so as to allow of the withdrawal of the international troops when the safety of the Mohammedan population is assured. The? surtax of 3 per cent, is to be continued, and a loan of £370,000 is to be raised, about one-third to pay indemnities to Greek and Cretanß, the remainder, about £240,000, being devoted to public works. The Greek Finance Commission' is to be extended ty \Crete, and a foreign offioial ia to be appointed to establish the service. Equal tights are to te given to Christians and Mohammedans, especially regarding public appointments, and a mixed commission, half Cretan and half Consular, is to be appointed to examine peases of dispossession of mosques, lands and cemeteries, to the prejudice of tho Mohammedans Government officials viowed these deoisions with disfavour, declaring that they would reduce the country to a state of slavery, especially in reference to the question of financial control, and Prince George applied to Athens for authority to tender his resignation of the High Com misaionership, which he had held since December 21st, 1898.
