MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
WORKS COMMITTEE. The ordinary meeting of the Masterton Borough Workß Committee, held last evening, was presided over by the Mayor, the other members present being Crs. E. McEwen, E. Feist, J. C. Ewington, E. G. Eton, W. Morris, F. W. Temple, T. G. Hoar, and J. Elliott. An apology for absenoe was reoeived from Or J. H. Pauling. Fourteeeu residents in and about South Road petitioned the Counuil to have a footpath made in that road. They pointed out that the population was rapidly increasing in that part of the Borongb, and those who resided ou the Borough aide of the road were willing to pay half the cost of the footpath. It was also thought that the ratepayers on the County Bide of the road would be willing to bear a share of the cost of the footpath, as they were desirous of seeing a footpath in the street. A deputation, consisting of Messrs P. Gordon* J. Wbitfcaker, E. G. Frost and A. G. Wise, waited on the Council in support of the petition.
Tbe Mayor pointed out that the road wae a boundary road between the Mastertou Borough and County, and as suoh the permission of the County Council was required before a footpath oould be made. The County Council would also have to bear part of the oost of the work.
The Counoil deoided that the work was necessary, and expressed their willingness to oarry it out. It was decided to reoommend the County Counoil to approve of the footpath being made.
It was deoided to write to Messrs S 'otfc and Beale, Pine Street, asking them to agree to a settlement by arbitration in connection with the taking of some of their land in conneotion with the widening of Pine Street. >
