A QUAINT DISCOVERY.

«> A quaint discovery of interest to Australians was recently made in a Surrey (England) laimbouse. While an attio was being got ready for a summer visitor Borne uld books and panhinents weie rooted out from an unsuspected resting place in the rafters. Between the covers of one of books were loose sheets, one .of which bore the date 1770. Those subsequently camo into the hands of the visitor, an antiquarian of some eminence. It appears likely that these stray relics over a century and a-quarter old will prove to "be the long-missing pages of the diary kept by Sir Joseph Bankß, who in 1786 left England in the Endeavour with Oapiain Cook and Di Solander, and was the namefalher of Botany Bpy. Much of the faded writing is undecipherable, but there is still visible a referene to a strange animal, seen for the first time, which was evidently a kangaroo.
