A Press Association telegram from Westport reports the death of Mr James Lynch, barrister and solicitor. The nett overdraft of the Masterton Borough Council is £4,175 13a 7d. The rates outstanding amount to £445 18s lOd. Mr Blackjrell, of Newcastle, New South Wales, who was selected for the position of. borough engineer at Gisborne, has declined the appointment. A lirge totara tree felled at Mangakabia, North Auckland, about 60 years ago, was split up the other day and found to be as sound as the day h was cut down. The Opaki Riflb Club will oommence trophy-shooting at the Opaki Range to-morrow. The Committee have not yet allotted the trophies for the season. The Railway Superannuation Fund is still increasing by leaps and bounds—the balance last year was £68,670, and on March 31st last it was £90,984. The Hastings branch of the Liberal and Labour Federation has passed a resolution urging the member for the district to give his whole support to the Land Bill now before Parliament. It is reported by th« Taihape News that the men on the cooperative works in that district have raised £Bl 7s 9d for the Wauganui Hospital. The Government subsidy will bring the amount up to about £179. At Ohakune, on Monday, a rather remarkable egg was laid by a ben belonging to one of the workers on the Main Trunk Line, says a rio&tempornry. Its weight was 7oz; length 3%iu; depth 2%in; oiroumferenoe 7>£in. A Dunedin telegram states that at the Police Court, yesterday, Helen F. Braid pleaded guilty to giving a false statement to the Registrar of Births at Mosgiel as to the age of her child, and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. The proposal to erect a cottage hospital at Hastings as a Seddon Memorial has been abolished owing to insufficient means for maintenance. A largo amount of money was promised on condition that a hospital was erected, and as this is an impossibility, a meeting uf suosoribers en Monday night decided to return all subscriptions paid and not further entertain the proposal at present. The deceasedwas 64 years of age, A husband, four sons and two daughters are left to mourn their loss. The funeral will take place at 2 o'clock on Thursday. Giving evidence before the Arbitration Court in Dunedin last week an employer naid that bricks were ' now 10 to 12 per cent, cheaper than they were when the brick- , workers' award was given three ' yearg ago. The building trade in Dunedin now was very poor indeed , compared with what it was when ' this award was made. The ordinary meeting of the Masterton Municipal Fire Brigade was - held last evening in the Central Station, Captain Jenkins presiding. A letter was received at the meeting of the Masterton Borough Council, last evening, from the Palmerston North Chamber of' Commerce asking the Oounoil to pass a resolution requesting the Government to take over the Manawatu Railway; also, asking the Council to appoint a representative to a deputation to wait on the Minister of Railways and the Premier in connection with the matter. "We have nothing to do with it, and ft does not concern us," said the Mayor, amid "Hear, hear's" from *he Councillors. "It's business, on the part, of the Paimerslon North Chamber of Commerce, no doubt," said Or Ewington. Considerable discussion took place at the meeting of the Fire Brigade, last evening, with regard to the water cut off in Queen Street on Monday without official information having been given to Captain Jenkins. The members expressed the opinion that in the event of an outbreak of fire the .Brigade would have been placed at considerable disadvantage owing to the water having been cut off without their knowledge. A complaint was made that no reply had been received to certain correspondence sent by the Brigade to the Borough Counoil. I The Government has intimated to V. the Land Committee its desire that they should lose no time in coming to a deoision on the Land Bill. Mr G. I. Dayßb, an old resident of the Wairarapa, died at Martinborough, on Saturday night. The deceased was 74 yeans of age. The funeral took plaoe yesterday. It is stated that Mr J. 0. N. Grigg, of Longbeaoh, Canterbury, intends to anticipate the £50,000 limit of land ownership by cutting up his property, whioh comprises 15,567 aores, of a capital value of £133,739, unimproved value £98,014. Dated from Pipiriki, Wanganui Kiver, New Zealand, on August 20th, John Donn writer to the Sydney Referee:—"l hopa that you will insert the following in your paper that Miss Ferry, of Wanganui, is willing to row any lady Soulier in Australia in outriggers, here on the Wanganui River. A deputation representing the ( employees of the Manawatu Railway Company asked the Minister , lor Railways on Monday to do what he aould to get the aompany'a employees brought under the operation of the Government Railway Supertannaation Fund as soon as posßicle. The Minister, in reply, said he could not be fxpeoted to introduce a measure which would serve the employees of a private company and pass over the Civil Service. He woald like to see a whole comprehensive scheme dealt with, but it did not seem possible this session. He would, iowever, consult Cabinet, and see what could bo done. The amount of work carried out by the staff of the Department of Surveys flast year greatly exceeded that of the year before. In all, 107 surveyors were kept going, of whom 76 were employed in the North Island and 31 in the South. They dealt with the following areas under the'different classes of work:—Minor tiianeulation, 355,072 acres; topo graphical, 345,670 aores; rural and suburban, 605,425 acres; town sec-1 tions, 939 acres; goldjmlning surveys, 4,191; Native Land 28,766 aores; rosda and railways. 307 miles. In Westland, exploration surveys were made of 101,577 acres of hitherto practically unknown country. At *ihe meeting of] the Masterton Borough Council, last evening, only one tender Was received for the construction of banks for ornamental waters in the Park, and bb that was about £IOO in excess of the money available for tha work, the tender was relented. For the work of formation" in Oookbarn Street only one tender was received, and that being in excess of the money available b7 about £6O it was also rejeoted. The two tenders received for road formation, etc., in Pine Street were rejeoted as the tenderers only tendered for a portion and not the whole of the work. Ihe Mayor said that he thought there was too much work in the towu at present and that was the reason why the contractors bad tendered such, high prioes. Yet, he said, he bad received about a dozen applications for work during the past week. He could not see why the contractors engaged on present contracts could ?not put on more men and get the work through quicker. It was deoided to call fresh tenders only for the work of bank construction and ornamental waters in the Park. Mr W. G. Lamb, of the Tararua Vineyard, requires a strong la*!. Messrs Gillespie and Co. are advertising for a ropeman for a sawmill; wages 10s per day. Messrs MoLeod and Young, are j now booking orders for the various J Christmas numbers of New Zealand weeklies. The Akitio County Council gives notice to strike, at their meeting to be held on Saturday, September 29tb, a general rate of on all the rateable property within the County. Mr W. G. Beard, solicitor for tne exeoutor in the estate of the late Mr George M. Urummond, notifies that all claims against the estate must be rendered to him on or before September 30th, 1906. The committee of the late Band, Fire brigade, and Volunteer Bazaar invite the stallholders and all those who assisted at the late Bazaar to a complimentary social and danoe in the Drill Hall this evening. Dancing will commence at 8 o'clock. The sale of boots and shoes at the Central Boot Depot will continue till the end of the present week, during which time Mr Carpenter will offer still further bargains in order to clear the stock, and make room fcr the new shipments coming to hand. Mr Robert Falloon, of Masterton, announces elsewhere that his Clydesdale colt,. Brilliant Boy, will be at the service of breeders in the Wairarapa. Brilliant Boy was bred by Mr Buckley, of Hoon Hay, Christchurob, and is from far-famed Clydesdale stock both on the side of his Bire and dam.
